Went to a local auction this morning and bought a lot of over 200 Classical records for £4.

Excellent!

I've asked for a bit of advice on the Classical thread, so any help would be appreciated Freddy.

Currently listening to JS Bach-Concerto For 2 Violins on a label called Supraphon, which I hadn't heard of before today. Not quite my style, but SQ is good.

I wish I could. I am by no means a classical aficionado. I was brought up listening to the 'popular' classics. My personal prefference is for the more dramatic/moody composers. This for me, means mostly eastern european composers. Borodin springs to mind, as does Gorecki. Rimsky-Korsakovs 'Scheherazade' is a stunning piece, imo. I've recently discovered some work by Vaughan Williams, 'The Lark Ascending' is now a firm favourite. Check out Dvorak too. I suppose everything depends on what floats your boat. For instance, I don't 'get' Mozart at all. Sorry I can't be of more help....

I've played a bit of Bach (OK, but meandering), Rachmanivov (again OK, but no real edge), Prokofiev (good, but reminds me a bit of music from a silent film), and I'm now playing Rimsky-Korsakov-Scheharazade, and I have to say that's a bit more like it. The opening bars were great, and though it's in a bit of a lull now, I'm hoping for more of that opening drama. As I'm writing, I'm enjoying it more. Still on side one, but this is definitely a keeper. Thanks Freddy.

Dvorak-New World Symphony

I'm enoying this too. I have a two recordings of this, but the one I'm playing sounds amazing (ASD3407 / Herbert Von Karajan / Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra), and as I write, we have a section I know very well. Toast anyone?

That's what I call a lot, in both senses of the word. Great bargain, too.

Supraphon was a Czech label, I think. Don't know much about them but I have a few of their LPs, I from memory the SQ is generally pretty good. I've even got a Supraphon quad LP, although of course I haven't got a quad system...

Any good? I've read mixed reviews.

Well, it's certainly not their best. I would view it as a nod to some of their previous works - 'A Saucerful Of Secrets', 'Us And Them' and a few others. I suppose the most disappointing thing is the lack of 'songs', only one track has vocals - 'More Than Words'. Having said that, it's nice enough, with Gilmour 'noodling' away, so in a sense, quite ambient with some nice soundscapes. I've only heard it once, so I need to become more familiar with it to form a more decisive opinion.

Cheers...Freddy

Bought three LPs from my brand new local record shop during their new year sale. He didn't have the things I was thinking of buying (from friends' recommendations), but I walked away with:

Jónsi – Go
Cat Power – The Greatest
Mogwai – Rock Action

none of which I know well, but seem worth a punt. All for £34 - pretty good value!

Armed with a £20 HMV voucher, and a bit of cash, I went shopping today. I was pleasantly surprised to see the vinyl section had doubled in size since my last visit, so I set about (with great eagerness) picking something to buy with my voucher. After 10 minutes, I reached the end of the racks, with nothing in my hands, very disappointing. Anyway, I was about to go, when I looked to my right, to see even more vinyl prominently displayed. The only thing I could see there that took my fancy was the new Aphex Twin album, but it was £24.99, which I thought was a bit steep. I then looked in the CD section to see it was only £9.99, and there and then I came to a decision, I will no longer spend silly money on new vinyl albums, though I will continue to seek out bargains at Car Boots and Charity Shops.

I came away with 3 CDs with my £20 voucher:

Squarepusher - Ufabulum (£5.99)

Autechre - Exai (£7.99)

V/A - Warp20 (Chosen) (£5.99)

I also popped into Poundland on my way back to the car park, and found Spiritualized - Let It Come Down on CD, so that came home with me too.

Whilst I'm talking about CDs, I bought the first 6 REM albums for a pound each from a Charity Shop just before Xmas, but I also found a bit of a gem, a sealed copy of REM-Murmur on a 24 karat gold audiophile disc, which will find itself being listed on eBay very soon.

Apologies for not buying any vinyl. *smile*

Very wise, BBB. New records are stupidly expensive and, soon enough, you'll get them at car boots and charity shops. Don't neglect markets; some very good dealers do weekly markets and their prices are way cheaper than discogs or ebay etc.

Having said all that Jim, I have just ordered the album by Alvvays on vinyl, but it was less than a tenner including postage, so no more than the CD.

I'm just getting into some electronic music Jim, and to me, it sounds just as good on CD as vinyl, so it'll be the CD every time until there's some sanity in the pricing of vinyl.

Am I right in thinking that I've seen you mention that you don't care for electronic music Jim? I do understand if that is the case, but I would like to steer you towards Autechre-Incunabula, which may change your mind to some small degree. I love it.

Hi BBB. You're right, I've never been a fan of electronic stuff, although I can listen to it; my daughter loves it and her boyfriend is supposedly pretty good at producing his own electronic music so I hear quite a bit of it. I will certainly find your recommendation online and listen to it; I'm getting less and less adventurous these days re music...it's my age, dear.

Spookily enough, I'm starting to listen to the cds I bought and have probably listened to once or twice because I guess the format just really doesn't appeal to me.

Thanks for your recommendation: I'll report back in the not too distant future.

Your "dull" is my melodic *blum3*

I've played it a few times now, and whilst it has no real stand-out moments, it's always nice to hear Rick Wright's (imo) unique sound/style. Another plus, no whinging ala Waters
