Hmm, Sonic Youth, another band I liked a lot when they were around but somehow never got around to buying any of their records (friends had them, and also on reflection I realise that I seemed to specialise in buying stuff that wasn't really that good). Might have to invest in a few now to see what I think of them all these years later. Thanks for the prompt, you two.

All part of the service.

I didn't get into them until a bit later but when I did I saw them at the Forum in London. One of the best gigs i have ever been to. Had a really bad support band, crowd got mighty hacked off, a few jumped the stage and kicked over the drums! Took an age for SY to come on, atmosphere was raelly charged. When they came on the place went mad, I was 2/3rds of the way back and still got caught in the moshpit, they played an absolute blinder, I woke up the next day black and blue, trainers ruined, shirt ripped but what a memory!

Nice one JIm. I never saw them live. There's a lovely video on BoobTube of them making a lovely racket on Brighton Beach one breakfast time in 1985. In fac there's another video of Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band performing on a beach (in Cannes) at breakfast time in 1968. Clearly the thing to do!

Thought I'd buy myself a Christmas present this year and some of the latest Music on Vinyl issues took my fancy so sent offf a list to Santa:-

Frank Zappa 'Puttin' on the Ritz' box set, Rory Gallagher 'Irish Tour '74' extended version, Jaco Patorius 'Word of Mouth', Joe Cocker ' Live', and Eddie Boyd with Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac '7936 South Rhodes' - that should keep the party going for a while.

'7936 South Rhodes' is a great record: one of my favourite Blue Horizon lps.

How about this? After discovering that a new second-hand shop had opened in the nearest city to me in September, a new 'new' record shop has just opened in our little market town. Great excitement, I'll be heading down there next week. I suppose this might be happening a bit more around the country now that vinyl sales have topped 1 milion (best sales since 1995, apparently).

Bass Communion – Bass Communion II (double LP)
Ian Clarke – Within. Heard a piece from this in a flute recital during the summer, and wanted to hear more.

Hopefully my next purchase will be from our new local record shop, and not mail order!

Popped into our brand new local record shop yesterday for a quick browse. Lots of vinyl as well as CDs - clearly the owner is an enthusiast - but most of it is reissues of old stuff and new 'beard rock'. Sure I'll find some goodies there, though, and he's more than happy to order anything.

Got home and a copy of Haunted House's album was on the door mat. It's a project between singer-songwriter Lianne Hall and Paul Hartnoll of Orbital. Didn't grab me quite as much on first listen as some of her other collaborations, but I'll try it again.

Doubt very much if it's anyones cup of tea here but took delivery this week of the remastered box-set of Donna Summer's Vinyl Collection, (covers all albums 1980-91, with the exception of She Works Hard For The Money as Universal still own the rights, also bought the CD Collection as well). Superb, on both fronts but then again I'm a fan so I guess I would say that.

Only problem is it now appears that the connection between my TT and amp is playing up

I just went on a Soul Funk spree on Dustygroove.com (highly recommend these guys!!!!).

I found about a dozen records with two of my favorite drummers (Bernard Purdie & Idris Mohammed). I picked up some Bernard Purdie leader records, but also some Lou Donaldson, Eddie Harris and Les McCann, Galt McDermott, Groove Holmes, Mongo Santamaria, and Roberta Flack.

I also bought two records when I saw Sharon Jones last week at the Apollo Theater in NYC. Great show. Bought a Sugarman 3 record and a Daptone compilation. I love supporting the Daptone crew for making records the right way that are just soo good!

Some good stuff there. I have a couple of Mongo Santamaria albums (Hey! Let's Party/Mongomania), a Groove Holmes album (American Pie), and the greatest Roberta Flack album (First Take). There's a few people there I don't know, but I have to admit that my love for soul/funk has waned over recent years.

Keep an eye out for the Marie 'Queenie' Lyons album "Soul Fever", some great tracks on that, and there's a great comp called "Living In The Streets" on the BGP label, which has some great funk etc on it. If you like your funk raw and rare, try the early Buttshaker comps.
