I'm also interested in the monitor audio a100, because it's small and supposedly sounds great.

Good choice. You can get one for £149 or less. Fantastic value for a fine sounding amp with analogue input, digital optical input and wireless DLNA streaming. It's very compact and has a funky remote to boot.

The only thing is that this is apparently an iPod/pad based amp. I don't own a single ios based item. Although considering the monitor audio came out at 400 pounds and it's amp section is supposed great, I should probably overlook this and simply use the single audio analog input

It's true that it supports Apple Airplay, but you can use it as a conventional amplifier with both analogue and digital inputs so you don't need a DAC. It doesn't have Bluetooth but a simple adaptor can sort that out.

The Denon PMA720AE is so good I've bought it 3 times. I loved it each time but the first two times I got bitten by the 'I could get even better if I just...' bug. Not this time.

Pioneer A30, Onkyo A9010UK and Marantz PM6005 also great amps.

Thanks all for the helpful info.

I went completely sideways on this one. I have a Marantz pm4200 which i really liked but it used to cut out regularly on me. It has been shelved in the attic for the last number of years ready for recycling. I started reading up about this about a week ago and it turns out speakers outside its recommended impedance can easliy trigger the cut out circuit. I was using JPW ML510 that were 6 ohms. The manual says use speakers between 8-16 ohms. I instead bought a set of Cambridege Audio sx-50, 8 ohm bookshelf speakers. So far so good.

For anyone interested Chrisr1718 may have a great deal on an amp if needed, I didn't require one after all.
