I am lost setting up my new system

TV-Panasonic TX 32 LXD60

DVDR-Panasonic DMR EX75EB

SKY - Thompson( I think) SKY+ BOX

Just bought Panasonic DVDV Home Theatre SCPT460

All have loads of different connections and I know from reading the mag that I can get better pictures and sound by using the correct connections -- but which ones?

At present all connected by scarts

I want to keep the DVDR as the home cinema will not record and I get another record option as well as the skybox- HELP - thanks Stu

Okay:

Leave the Sky+ box hooked to the TV using RGB Scart, then hook this into the Home Theatre SC-PT460 using an optical cable to get Sky TV sound through the speakers.

Hook the Panasonic DMR EX75EB to the TV using HDMI and then (if you want to) hook this to the Home Theatre SC-PT460 using another optical cable for surround sound from your DVD recorder. I say "if you want to" because, to do this, you'll need an optical splitter like this one as there is only one optical input on your SC-PT460. Whether you do this or not really depends on if you're going to use this to play DVDs. My guess is you have the Sky+ box hooked up to this via Scart and you use it to archive off recordings you want to keep? This should stay the same if so.

Finally, hook the Panasonic Home Theatre SC-PT460 to the TV using another HDMI cable. You could use this for DVDs you see, and the sound will already come out of the speakers since it's built in (thus negating the need for the optical cable for your DVD recorder). I'd recommend having a look at the picture of this vs the DVD recorder you have and see which is better to determine which one you use.

Hope this helps!

This definately helped me because I didn't know about such a thing as a Optical splitter. I have a Sony Dav-is10 hooked up to the Sky+ box and was wondering what will I do when I eventually get round to owning a Playstation-3 (hopefully in the next couple of days), as the Playstion-3 also uses a optical connect but the Dav-is10 only having one optical input.

Some people has even said to me you're just gonna have to keep unplugging and plugging the optical lead and live with it, (so it's great to trawl throught these other forums eh, pick up all sort of useful knowledge haha)

One thing though, with a optical splitter the performance is still the same right?

It shouldn't affect the performance. The only one I have had experience with is one I got for a friend from Lektropacks. It's more expensive, but I've no idea if it's any better than the one from Maplin or not. I do know the above one had no detrimental affect on the sound on my mate's system though.
