Hi Pp a wee left field suggestion...pre owned naim superuniti's are starting to come in at your price bracket.mmmmm, excellent amplification,Internet, dab radio, digital and analogue inputs,Bluetooth,Spotify, tidal support, just add a phono stage and you have one fine do it all system in not many boxes..oh and that cd73 will sing using those digital inputs,so you get a cd player upgrade at the same time also.lol . I'm going to hold out for the new unitistar myself within a year or so.

Tell me more about Accuphase SQ. I've got my eye on the E-450 and read and heard a lot of good things about the brand. If you could give me a profile on how they are presented it'll be appreciated.

Cheers, PP.

I'm not very good at putting it into words, but for me it just has everything... baring in mind I've only ever heard them with Harbeth, but I feel confident they would drive any loudspeaker without a problem.

The E350 and my current E470, both class A/B possess the best of both... detail without ever being harsh, all the base you would ever need, natural mids and the added bonus of tone controls.

Just make sure the E450 has a built in phono stage, they don't all come as standard.

I was that confident I would like the branddf, I bought the E350 blind! and never regretted it.

You're always welcome to come for a listen.

There are some amps where you simply forget what character they have, because they just sound "right" (so analysis becomes irrelevent)....and I believe Accuphase belong in this catagory. The sound becomes more about the performance of the musicians, than it does about the amp.

Few models, let alone brands, fall into this most exclusive group (at sensible money)....but a clue is when you struggle to find a single negative comment about it anywhere. Accuphase is one of those brands.

I don't think an 8 series with PSX-R is on the same level as a Tucana though.

IMO on same or higher level. But those bridged Leema Element power blocks might give everything mentioned in this thread red cheeks.

Everybody thinks "their" amp is best (not surprisingly)...

I think Electro's amps are the best among our forumites.

That is quite a possibility.

All I can tell you, is that I preferred the AMS 35i with Linn Majik DS + Kef Ref 205/2

to

Electro EMC 1 with Spider clamp + Electro EC 4.8 + Electro 180 monos + Spendor ST

I cannot say for certain unless I heard the Electros in my system.

All we know is that you prefered Kef Ref 205/2 over Spendor ST.

Possibly, but I have heard the AMS on a number of speakers, including Focal Scala Utopia (which I also heard with some decent Electro gear) and again preferred the AMS....even though it certainly couldn't compete on power.

I don't consider that mini amp even in the same league. I burn through 30W with sealed enclosure speakers like elephant eating 30 peanuts. Dynamic compression would bother me especially with classical music.

Provided you use a speaker that is efficient (90 dB+) and has plummeting impedance (around 3 Ohms), then you are getting much more than 30W (as it doubles power as impedance halves, down to 2 Ohms).

The amp goes louder than my hearing can stand in a large room...just ask Iceman if you don't believe me. *music2*

Are you sure it's not a headphone amp?

What area of the country do you live?

Bromley Kent

Mac, I had no idea that you were so close to me !

I am only about 20 miles from you just the other side of the Dartford Bridge in South Ockendon.

If I had known I could have picked you up and brought you to mine rather than rely on Colin to bring you.

If you would still like to come for a visit and listen to some music you are very welcome.

Let me know if you can.

You are very kind Vladimir and possibly right *biggrin* , but then I would say that wouldn't I.

I am not going to say mine are the best how could I possibly know, but I can say that I have heard nothing better in my lifetime at any price.

Actually the star of the show is the EC 4.8 preamp, It is the most transparent preamp I have ever heard, it is quite special and the sound quality competes with the best at any price imo and also in many other people's.

The AW180's are absolute beasts but they are also as delicate as a butterly, it is rare that an amp can be so good at doing everything so well, everybody that has heard them has been very impressed indeed.

Blimey I know Bromley very well. I'm a few miles SW of Bromley/Beckenham/Croydon.... I purchased the Blu-Ray player from RS in Bromley.

It's very doable for me.

Like I say you're most welcome... I work during the week usually, but I am off this coming Monday. If that's too soon, weekends are best.
