I know it's a tad risky but I'm thinking of putting my Pulse up for sale. The reason is I've just received details in the post from Unilet. Every year they have a 'Blue Murder' sale. They have a s/hand Tucana MKII for £1749. The sale starts on the 6th May. I don't think I'll dislike the Pulse's bigger brother, therefore...

FWIW. I think you will find that a "Pulse on Steroids" will be a revelation....and that the talents of said amp will continue to unfold over a perod of time, as you put on tracks that you "think" you know.

On the other hand, the bigger amp could mean more control and perhaps less 'musicality' ... flow ... rhythm... whatever you want to call it.

It does happen occasionally. Bigger amps need usually control bigger speakers.

Just sayin :)

@Drummerman

Don't have any concerns in this area. The Pulse is very grippy on the LFs but it remains very musical. The Tucana should have those traits with extra all-round ability. That's what I'm banking on anyway.

So yeah, there's always a small element that could disappoint, I suppose -- think it's worth the slight risk though.

You could always save up for a Leema Quasar. If the review on AV Forums is anything to go by it's a very powerful and musical (10/10 score) amp with in-built streaming capability. No phono input though. It even looks like a Pulse so you could get it past your other half without them noticing the change ;)

By "Pulse on Sterioids", I was referring to the Tucana....are you referring to something bigger. (I agree about the bigger amp...which is what I was talking about).

The Quasar does look tempting but I fear all that wonderful technology will be lost with me. My main source is vinyl.

Here's an extract from the review. And it sounds pretty tasty:

"If brute force was the sole forte of the Quasar, it would be amusing but not truly noteworthy but with this devastating power comes a seriously lovely presentation as well. The Leema is able to balance the contradictory requirements of sounding powerful and exciting while also offering sumptuous levels of refinement. This makes for a product that can handle pretty much anything you care to throw at it."

...except vinyl..... unless you add another box, sadly.

Indeed Al. Factor in a couple of hundred quid for a phono stage and it doesn't look as good value. The same with the Tucana, but at least the s/hand one I'm looking at is a little sweeter.

Looks good for the purely digital brigade but I am one who likes to mix my sources still.

Hopefully you will get a good deal on second-hand Tucana.

There's an Ams on gumtree atm whilst over budget you won't look back

I've a feeling that PP doesn't want something that gets hot enough to fry his breafast bacon on, while pulling 400 Amps from the wall (no matter how good it sounds)....and I suspect that 2k is the as much as he wants to spend.

Can't be certain as I've never heard your amp, PP, but based on my own experience be prepared to factor in more than £200 for a phono stage to match the one in the Pulse. I tried a £225 Pro-ject stage against the one in my Marantz and it did not cut the mustard... I wasn't prepared to go to £4-500 so stopped looking and settled with the Marantz.

@Chebby

If you read back I wasn't that interested in Yamaha based on the older model I heard years ago. Hoiwever, I was taken by the VU meters - and the local stockist could order one in.
@ PP

there's nothing wrong in VU meters they are good sounding ones it's a very good amplifier at least it's got a very good phono stage .*smile*
