The Specials - The Specials

The Cult - Electric

Nirvana - Nevermind

The Damned - The Damned

Suede - Suede

Adam and The Ants - Dirk Wears white Sox

The Doors - Waiting For The Sun

Manic Street Prechers - Holy Bible

David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust

Depeche Mode - Violator

Now now now, The Holy Bible was holy indeed, but Everything Must Go had A Design For Life - arguably the greatest song of the last 18 years. I honestly can't think of a greater song. It made everything by Nirvana seem like piffle.

Cheap, anthemic, pop rubbish (since we've started bashing other people's choices).

Oh please, could you write anything near as good? I've got absolutely no qualms about 'bashing other people's choices'

And that drum solo at the end was just downright inspired. The band played that song out of their skins - usually this only happens live, but this was in the studio - and you could just hear that the whole band knew they they were on the cusp of something truly great. And that string solo - well that gets me high every time.

The entire song was a solidified piece of brilliance - for this to have happened in 1996 was nothing short of a miracle.

So cheap, anthemic rubbish? Still better than anything Nirvana ever did. On Nevermind anyway.

Abysmal carp imo.

The song version of a painting by numbers picture.

Much like most of the boy band rubbish we have these days.

You're comparing this to the boy bands?? You need your ears washed with acid pronto. And what exactly was Smells Like Teen Spirit?? Smelly indeed, and not in a good way.

Well, no, I reckon One Direction have better songs than "Design for life".

I feel no need to defend SMTS.

Because the piece of carp is plain indefensible.

These ten for me:

- Billy Bragg: Life's a Riot with Spy versus Spy

- Radiohead: The Bends

- The Beatles: White Album

- Ryan Adams: Cold Roses

- Pixies: Death to the Pixies

- Nick Cave: The Boatman's Call

- Crowded House: Woodface

- Portishead: Roseland NYC Live

- Rodrigo y Gabriella: Rodrigo y Gabriella

- Tom Waits: Raindogs

Recenty been listening to that woodface album on spotify, for some reason CH were never on my radar during the eighties and ninties , apart from hearing the then overplayed 'weather with you', and 'dont dream its over' upmteen times on the radio , but its hearing the less popular stuff is were neil finns talent lies, some good well recorded tunes on there , just been going through other CH albums, 'together alone' and 'afterglow'

Hi John,

My fav Crowded House track is no doubt 'Sister Madly', from 'Temple of Low Men', but as an album it's Woodface all the way!

I'm assuming you've never heard Together Alone? That was Crowded House's swansong and their real masterpiece. Nearly every song was brilliant.

Oh, I heard Together Alone! Some very decent songs indeed. The best - for me - is, err..., Sister Madly (live on the bonus disk). :p

Some great albums mentioned so far.

Fleetwoodmac - Rumours is one I only play every couple of months and every time it is so refreshing to hear.

Leonard Cohen Old Ideas - surprising as I didn't really like it the first play, thought it was too talky but grew on me, really well produced too.

Combat Rock - The Clash

Alan Parsons Project - eye in the sky I know a lot of prog fans scoff at it but I love it.

not ot a top ten, not in order but a few that could easily make my top ten if I really gave it some thought that haven't been mentioned much.

while I respect everyone's personal choice I need to vent, I just can't belive how U2 have, in my opinion of course conned so many people in to thinking they're a good band, I think they are just terrible.

I feel much the same about Fleetwood Mac. Screechy, whiney, awful.

Although I do like the F1 song (At least until after the F1 bit, then I can switch off).

I'll add "Unforgettable Fire" to my list...

I think U2 are very patchy. The only U2 album I really love is 'Achtung Baby' which would probably just about make it into a top 50.

As for Fleetwood Mac, I love them. Seen them live twice and Rumours and Tusk were both very close contenders when I was coming up with my latest top 10 list. They'd certainly both be in my top 20.

I agree that it's a few notches above their other stuff. I think U2 have on the whole produced post-punk rock that chugs along nicely enough musically but is marred by Bono's immense self-regard.

With 'Achtung Baby' for a brief moment the band was taken out of itself and into another place, whether under the influence of Lanois and Eno or because they were tapping into the edgy Berlin scene or perhaps because of the momentary appearance of a self-critical sense of humour on the part of His Bononess.

IMO it's a pretty good album by an otherwise average band. Even so, as an antidote I'd recommend a listen to Half Man Half Biscuit's most excellent album 'Achtung Bono'.

I love a good mashup.

This one is amazing. It's a mashup of 39 songs in less than three and a half minutes mixed together live in realtime. Clicky

These are my other two favourite mashups:

Xilent vs Wynter Gordon Clicky

Prodigy vs Pendulum vs Limp Bizkit Clicky

Yep, love that track. The Dance video with Nathan Barnatt in it is so much fun :)
