HI, I went to my local HiFi shop with great eagerness to demo the Yamaha RX-V1065 with MA Radius HD package and Pioneer LX-52.

I was bitterly disappointed to see the perfomance of the 1065. It certainly was no better than my yamaha 861 which I am planning to replace. It had to be played very loud for any detail or punch and I agree the dialogue is not clear. Watched TRANSFORMERS and the sales guy also shocked (it was the first demo) at the lack of performance. He had plenty of experince having worked in the field for many years.

I am planning to demo the yamaha 3900 and denon 3310 and the maraantz 6004. Hope I dont return as disappointed.

You say it was the first time the guy had demoed the amp. Was the first time the shop had run it at all.

If so did it need and therefore had it been fully run in?

The amp had been demo-ed for about 3 weeks but his was first time this guy had been involved bcos apparently he had been away. Even his colleauges had the same opinion.

Were the settings correct?I believe it's strange that WH gives 5 stars(as good as the Denon)and some users not even 2 or 3???

Some people who are happy with their 1065????

Did he run the amp set-up with the speakers? And then check the speaker small/large settings? Yamahas have a tendancy to get everything right apart from the speaker size, all of which need changing to small if a sub is being used.

Sounds to me it was the sound of the blu ray player and not the amp.

I home demo the pioneer 52 and it sounded terrible.

He had plenty of experince having worked in the field for many years. As already mentioned, there could be any number of reasons why this demo wasn't sounding right - Bluray player settings, amp settings, room EQ, and speaker choice spring to mind straight away. It's very easy to make an AV system sound bad, but there's a bit of a knack to making it sound amazing.

The 3900 and 3310 will certainly be a big step up from the 1065, and these amplifiers will deserve a slightly larger speaker package, although having said that the MA Radius can sound excellent on the right amp.

Well I'm certainly happy with mine. I've had it for 3 weeks and bought it as an upgrade on my Sony DA-1200ES. It's a massive improvement on this, with a much more natural sound field which doesn't just rely on booming out some bass to impress.

I'm finding it a much better machine for music as well. Using the PS3 to stream files from my laptop in Pure Direct Mode demonstrates clarity and dynamics entirely lacking in the Sony, which was a 5 star product also 3 years ago.

Set up is a bit fiddly and you do need to listen it after the firmware upgrade which allows you to assign optical and coaxial audio for Sky and DVD.

The main problem for me has been with Sky pictures which can occassionally black out entirely when in 'through' mode via the amp.

But apart from that I'm very happy.

Sorry mystified how you can say the Yam is thin and reedy, they typically sound warm.

I have the RX-V765 with Tannoy speakers, i cant stand a bright sound, check out the hi fi gear i have, if it was any more laid back it would fall over !

As to not loud enough, my front room is two knocked into one, over 20 ft long about 15 wide with a very high ceiling.

No problems, on Knowing with the airplane crash on -10 the dog hides under the bed upstairs.

I would say, not set up properly, fresh from the box, or incompatable speakers, or room acoustics.

Hi, thanx for all the responses, I am not saying the demo was perfect but maybe i expected too much out of the amp due to the 5 star review. I had a demo of the denon 1910 earlier and have to say it beats the yamaha 1065 in my eyes and I was not the only one who was surprised to notice the difference in perfomance. There might have been an issue with the demo of the yamaha 1065. I shall check it out when I demo the 3900 and 3310.

P.S - Frank which do u think might be a suitable amp for the MA radius 270, cheers

I've had a demo with 1910/2310 and Yam 1065 and I can tell you, there really was a difference between the 1910 and the Yam.

In my opinion the Yam was better!

They played it with Elac speaker setup, the fs range.

How did the 2310 compare to the 1065 in your opinion?

The Yamaha's sound was a bit different,a little warmer. When listening to Metallica's "one"the helicopters and fireworks were more "around"me with the Yamaha.

But,as I live in Belgium,we don't have a special tuned Denon like in the UK

I have the Yahama 1065 driving the old MA 270 fronts, MA 225 centre and 90's at the rear, It took me a few days to fine tune the system but now it is for me at least fantastic. Volume, well very very loud, I have a 20X10ft lounge and could not have it anywhere near full volume, battle scenes from Saving Private Ryan or Gladiator are very exiting indeed. It is also good with music but you do have to spend some time tuning it for your own enjoyment.

I am delighted with the system total cost of about £1250 from P Tyson, dont think you could beat it for the money!

John
