While waiting to get into 'Scott Pilgrim Vs The World' yesterday, we thought we'd have a wander around 'Best Buy'.

Amongst the array of Kef speakers which seem to be present in every large electrical store these days, I saw these gorgeous Yamaha speakers in piano black.

Sadly, due to only having ten minutes or so before having to leave for the film, I wasn't in a position to check them out any further than clocking the price. £999.

Just wondered if anybody else has had a more in-depth play with them yet. They certainly look the money.

I haven't heard them, but, you're right, Chris, they have a great look to 'em. What did you see, the standmount or floors?

The floorstanders Brett.

I would struggle to acommodate floorstanders in all honesty, due to the speaker's location near a 2 seater sofa, but they weren't very big, and at £1000 were on budget (albeit the very top of my budget).

I still think I'll be after standmounts come upgrade time, but there's no harm looking is there.

We sell these at my work. I've listened to much of my collection on them through a yamaha as-700 amp.

They have a nice midrange but the tweeter is a little scratchy if you have it at mid to high volume levels. The soundstage could do with some arrangement, but I get the feeling thats the amplifier because i've had a brief listen to them through quite a high end AVR and it seemed to be a bit more organised.

Aside from this though they're actually fairly enjoyable to listen to. They seem to bounce along to music quite nicely without being over excited. They can also produce the subtle notes efficiently

It would be interesting to listen to them through a better stereo amp then the Yamaha. If you could clean up the treble somewhat with a good pairing they would probably prove to be a formidable pair of speakers.

What AVR would you consider 'good pairing'?

Have ordered a pair of these,7 not having lots of options in the store to try... now thinking to experiment with pairing (e.g.Sony STR-DN1040) or send it back.
