Wiim Mini with SMSL SU-1 vs Pro Plus?

I did look for this discussion but couldn't find the answer, thought I'd sign up as I'm very much down a rabbit hole.

I just had a WiiM Mini delivered on the plans to get an external DAC...but I've since started to sonder if I should have just got the WiiM Pro Plus? I can still send the mini back. So...the choice is; Mini with an SMSL SU-1 Dac (or similar), or a little more cash on the Pro Plus? Keeping it all in on box.

Would the external dac be a better? or is the final sound not much different.

Many thanks!

I have a WiiM Mini into a Topping E30ii DAC ... so somewhat like what you are thinking. If I could do it all again, I'd have just purchased the Pro Plus in order to get a one box solution. But then again, maybe the WiiM Ultra ;-)

If the cash outlay is the same, go the Pro Plus.

Thanks all!!

I am tempted with a single box solution.

Yea I actually saw the ultra on prime day for that price and was the last day and don’t know much about them.

Since looking Into WiiM, ive decided I want something simple for my hifi, and when I get round to sorting my TV system out I plan to get the ultra for that and link them up.

This query crops up almost daily on the Wiim Fanatics facebook group. Amazing because some bloke on YouTube gave an ecstatic review that thousands went out to buy an extra DAC.

I’ve no idea what the ‘answer’ is, but I know my ProPlus sounds very good with its own AKM DAC, and the Wiim app works brilliantly on an iPad or iPhone. Whisper it, but it’s better for stability and functionality than Linn’s own app, much as I loved my Scottish streamer.

Generally, I tend to prefer fewer boxes in the signal path, while acknowledging that tinkering can be fun too!

When you buy small, you end up spending big later!
I wish I'd listen to other peoples advice. 🙂

Here's the caveat, if you plan to upgrade your streamer in a couple of years time, to something more grand like the ICON Node or one of the Eversolo streamers, get the mini/SU1.
Or if you want something decent but not plan to upgrade or spend excessive amount of money on a streamer, get the Pro Plus...hang on, let me take a pic....just a sec!

If you decide on the Pro Plus it's a good streamer, I have the coax on my Pro Plus output to my Eversolo DAC and I'm getting some decent sounds.
I believe somebody already mentioned it, the WiiM app is seamless and easy to navigate. The only thing I don't like about it, is it on or is it on standby. White light is standby?

🙂

As much as I would love to, I think this will be it for a good while. I love the Cambridge steamers with the screens. It not sure I can justify that kind of money. If space and budget allowed I’d look at the ultra for both systems as they look nicer and the screen is always nice.

I think the few boxes is more appealing than the looks. So I reckon I’ll go for the pro plus. Seeing as sound wise it’s not much difference. I may have a re think and see if the ultra will fit…but don’t think it will! The remote is also handy thing that it already comes with too.

Yes, the Pro Plus comes with remote, but mine hasn’t even been opened as the app was so good. The only uncertainty is that standby and on aren’t easy to distinguish. Both are the same white light, just slightly different brightness!

I can’t comment on the Wiim streamers, but can on the SMSL SU-1 DAC.

I’ve tried a number of small DACs as below;
- Cambridge Audio DacMagic 100
- Khadas Tone Board
- Topping D10s Mini
- SMSL SU-1

Of them all the SMSL has been the best, plus it gives you options regarding other streamers in the future.

DG…

I think either route will be fine sonically. Not quite what is being asked, but I had a Mini and Mojo 2 which sounded just as good as the current Pro Plus plus Mojo 2. However, remember there might be other reasons for going with the Pro Plus over the Mini as it has more features. For instance, I have found using the ProPlus Squeezelite client much more reliable than the UPNP bridge workaround required for the Mini.
