Wiim Mini with SMSL SU-1 vs Pro Plus?

I did look for this discussion but couldn't find the answer, thought I'd sign up as I'm very much down a rabbit hole.

I just had a WiiM Mini delivered on the plans to get an external DAC...but I've since started to sonder if I should have just got the WiiM Pro Plus? I can still send the mini back. So...the choice is; Mini with an SMSL SU-1 Dac (or similar), or a little more cash on the Pro Plus? Keeping it all in on box.

Would the external dac be a better? or is the final sound not much different.

Many thanks!

I have a WiiM Mini into a Topping E30ii DAC ... so somewhat like what you are thinking. If I could do it all again, I'd have just purchased the Pro Plus in order to get a one box solution. But then again, maybe the WiiM Ultra ;-)

If the cash outlay is the same, go the Pro Plus.

Thanks all!!

I am tempted with a single box solution.

Yea I actually saw the ultra on prime day for that price and was the last day and don’t know much about them.

Since looking Into WiiM, ive decided I want something simple for my hifi, and when I get round to sorting my TV system out I plan to get the ultra for that and link them up.

This query crops up almost daily on the Wiim Fanatics facebook group. Amazing because some bloke on YouTube gave an ecstatic review that thousands went out to buy an extra DAC.

I’ve no idea what the ‘answer’ is, but I know my ProPlus sounds very good with its own AKM DAC, and the Wiim app works brilliantly on an iPad or iPhone. Whisper it, but it’s better for stability and functionality than Linn’s own app, much as I loved my Scottish streamer.

Generally, I tend to prefer fewer boxes in the signal path, while acknowledging that tinkering can be fun too!
