Octopo:
I don't treat it as a package. As mentioned before - a Vectra is a good 'package' but I'll take the Alpha Romeo anyday.

I wasn't making the comparison of Arcam and Vauxhall, I was commenting on this package concept. Surely you buy hi-fi gear for how it sounds? Maybe it's just me. I think you hit the nail on the head there though Hughes!

I must admit to loving the Honda Legend :-(

(Maybe a very 'Arcam' sort of car (?) but has refined power in spades and seems to make every long journey about 30 percent shorter.)

Ok I have my coat....

Ah, but the Honda Legend has one major advantage over the Vauxhall... Its a well engineered motor with proper Japanese reliability, not rubbish Vauxhall design faults and longevity issues!!!!

Octopo - Yes, you are of course absolutely correct that we all buy hi-fi for its sound, but what would the point be in wonderful sounding kit that never worked? Its like having a car thats great to drive but always breaking down. Useless! Good hi-fi and good cars should offer sound/driving satisfaction AND reliability surely!!

You'll be hard pushed to find electronics from a well known hi-fi brand that aren't reliable (cue the onslaught of one off failure stories). Brands in mind?

That Vauxhall is sexy as! I know plenty of girls that say a big saloon (that's not an "executive") is as sexy as it gets! Couple that with it being the MV6 version - which does 0-60 in under 7 seconds, and you've got yourself one sweet car!

As for reliability, we had a Vauxhall Omega 3.0 V6 24v Elite from 1995-1998 and it didn't break down once...apart from when it said there was 30miles of fuel left and there wasn't...

I'm not saying there are any, just responding!! I'm not a huge pro-Arcam person either. In fact I've had two Arcam systems that lasted short periods of time with me because I found them.... boring. I'm just trying to discuss the brand in a balanced way, taking their huge popularity into account.

The reliability thing relates more to cars than hi-fi I suppose. Renault, Alfa Romeo....

That's maybe because it typically reminds them of what their dads drive and that is a whole juggernaut of Freud we had better not get into! (Competence, confidence. assuredness, maturity, financial security etc. All the things a 'boy' their own age lacks basically.)

Actually, I'll give you the reliability thing. The Omega was a different beast to most of the range at the time and did have solidity in its favour.

Still wouldn't describe it as remotely sexy though.

Just a thought, wouldn't you have been 5 years old in 1998?

Yep! My Dad replaced it with a Jaguar XJS, but I remember the Omega fondly...I can still remember details down to the fake wood on the rear door panels and the fact it had traction control which no other car had then!

Chebby, you seem to have a better understanding of the other sex more than many. Care to share more wisdom?

Goodness no. What I mean is.. no, I don't think I have any more wisdom than any other bloke of 40 something and it would be presumptious to assume I have anything useful to say on the subject of living in the world with women (wives, GFs, daughters, colleagues etc.)

Deep pockets, a sense of humour, the capacity to be endlessly suprised and just a tiny bit of 'last century' benign chauvanism mixed with chivalry when appropriate. OK to to be a slob sometimes (it's expected anyway) so long as you can occasionally scrub up well and do a bit of the 'dashing romantic' in public, uninhibited, as if you really mean it (and without checking the bill). Defer to the females around you but (again) just occasionally be decisive on a few of the big things to demonstrate you are not either a complete walkover or the 'family pet'.

Oh yes, in 27 years of being together we have never had a shared bank account. Probably the biggest factor in staying together (apart from the fact that I love her to bits.)

A few of you 'gentlemen of middle years' may detect that 'Superpig' by the late, great William Rushton was an early (and seminal) influence on me when it was first published. (I was 16 and confused as hell about women of course.) For better or worse, bits of William Rushton's wise and hilarious words have come to my rescue a few times in the past. Be warned though, it is not the 'bible' on such matters and it is dated. (Like me!) But for a 16 year old in the 1970s it sure came in handy and proved itself more than just an entertaining read on quite a few occasions.
