Can anyone explain to me why when I place my amp (Sony STR-DA1200ES) on “Night Mode” I get a better bass from my Kef Sub (Kef 2005.1) than when it’s not set on this mode?

I understand that when in night mode the bass is meant to decrease to stop keeping the household up late in evening etc…. strange but if you have any ideas please reply.

Thanks Andrew as ever do you think my amp could be on its way out?

I dont know your amp but some 2 channel amps have a "loudness" button.

My understanding was that this increased both treble & bass so that a low volumes (night time listening) these could be heard better.

This is the opposite to how you think your amp is working - but I could be wrong!

Yes, the Night Mode on this amp increases the bass and treble, to compensate for listening at lower levels, and also maximises the Dynamic Range Compressor effect, so the differences between the loudest and quietest sounds are greatly reduced.
