Hmm, I didn't think this was the thread I clicked on. Reminds me of my mate who always whinges about Apple despite hardly using any Apple products. The main thing that sets him off is that he can't do things exactly the way he wants, i.e. exactly the way using Windows for years has trained him to do.

It is somewhat amusing that whatever a website's main purpose is you tend to get Apple / Microsoft debates and they tend to be the same debates. They also tend to be fruitless but that's the web for you.

PS Having standardised operating systems is a good thing as it allows useful software to be developed as it has a potentailly huge market. I'm old enough to remember when every computer manufacturer had their own operating system and software was incredibly expensive as it was written for each niche market. You wouldn't have Word / Excel etc without standardised operating systems and that tends to mean monopoly suppliers.

I recently 'configured' a Dell mini desktop PC as closely as possible to the nearest equivalently specified Mac Mini and there was about £25 difference (with delivery the Dell was actually more).

Out of the 18 years of Windows PCs / laptops in our home (my works laptop is still Windows) we have also had over eight years of Apple (since our first iMac).

Since then I have associated the Apple gear as fun and relaxation (music, photography etc.) and Windows as necessity (work).

I am happy that other people have their own preferences based on their experiences. Chucking around terms like 'Borg' doesn't change that or my own preferences. Seen it all before with the Canon vs Nikon to##ers. (Not the people who enjoyed taking photographs but the idiots just liked to fight about it.)

Not my main annoyances with Microsoft. Never had an issue with viruses and security, although I do have lingering memories of my antivirus software slowing things down.

There are certain things I'd much rather use on a Windows machine, but on the balance of how I use it and enjoy the experience I prefer to use Apple at home. I never get how people get so worked up over one brand or the other.

Now can we somehow change the topic of this thread to a PMC vs Tannoy slanging match until plasticpenguin puts up his review?

Yup, did go and was pretty impressed. However, I've been so busy getting new togs for the new term which starts Thursday - and I've been catching up on on work. Generally this time of the year is generally quiet.

I'll give you a full run down over the next couple of days. Suffice to say I'm seriously pondering the Tannoys...

Apple use more custom builds to fit in nice lovely shiny cases is all, which in turn makes it more expensive, but it doesn't mean that the parts themselves are more expensive per se. In fact, some of the parts apple uses (such as the network chips) are actually at the cheaper end of the market.

Apple designs its own chips for mobile and gets other companies to make them to their design and spec.

In any case, the more important bit is the OS, which has always been the reason the Apple experience is superior.

This is one of the strangest dems I've had: Once the Leema, Electro and PMCs were set up had to spend a little time getting used the different acoustics. The Tannoys are fabulous looking little speakers, although with the covers off the concentric driver looks like an inverted whistle. Compared to the standard driver set-up, it took a little getting used to.

One thing that hits you about the Tannoys is a fairly ballsy sound: There was an immediacy I didn't expect. Every individual sonic element is there, and wasn't any worse than the PMCs. Detail levels across all frequencies was pretty impressive, and the whole presentation was enjoyable as a whole.

It is true, they perhaps don't have the outright grunt of the PMCs - that's to be expected. At no time did I have the impression that any one frequency overpowered another. Imaging is excellent for a sub-1000 pound speaker. However, everytime I switched back to the PMCs, whether it's because I'm so familiar with the PMC sound or some other reason, it sounded more cohesive with the PMCs. Not by much, and whether it's timing or not, the Tannoys didn't seem to knit the sound together as well...

Anyway, while I was there one of the assistants came in while the PMCs were playing, and offered me a good price for my speakers. This is bonkers, as effectively the Tannoys would be peanuts.

With a badly bruised kneecap and still a little unsure about what I heard... I have to decide whether to take a slight downshift in SQ with the Tannoys to appease Mrs. P, or put up with her occasional grumblings and keep the PMCs.

FWIW. My advice is, "never go backwards unless you really have to".

My experience of Tannoys is very similar to your description. They are very clean, balanced and immediate sounding. For my taste, these traits "can" give a presentation that's a little "hot" in the treble and upper mids, if incorrectly matched.

I have always felt that they worked very well with the likes of Arcam and Electrcompaniet. IMO. They are more musical than the MA speakers that I've heard. Their dual concentric arrangement (like Kef), also has it's benefit.

I would expect them to work better with Electro, than Naim.

Under PMC's old naming convention you had names like 'Little Box' (LB1), 'Floor Box' (FB1) and 'Dinky Box' (DB1).

Your TB2s were 'Tiny Boxes' in this PMC code. How can a speaker described as 'tiny' - and only one size up from the miniature DB1s - cause grumblings?

If these 400mm x 200mm x 300mm 'behemoths' (?) get in the way that much then why not get some s/hand DB1is (or brand new DB1 Golds) and wall mount them?

You'll probably get enough from selling the TB2s to cover the cost of either option.

I have noticed you still keep swapping or looking to swap parts of your system around pp.naim to electro.Now your speakers.Try and get a demo of an exposure 2010 s2 dac. I think it sounds awesome with the pulse and Pmc's if you had one of these I think it would cure your need to system swap. It seems to have fallen below the radar on most forums, but if you read the reviews that are around they are all positive. It is not over anilitical. Just so damn musical.
