On Friday lunchtime after a couple of festive drinks, we decided that A Different Class should definitely make the list. But it took a couple of festive drinks, mind...

What, so little funk or soul? Don't you audiophiles groove?

Ok then, a few things...

Stevie Wonder - innervisions (no-brainer)

Marvin Gaye "Here, My Dear" (the anguished one about his marriage break-up, for all the Radiohead fans)

Rufus and Chaka Khan - Rufusized

Gil Scott Heron - Glory (2CD compilation with loads of great tracks)

Ohio Players - Pain

George Benson - Weekend in LA

How about padding out the Jazz a bit...

Stantey Turrentine - Salt Song (heading towards fusion)

Les McCann and Eddie Harris - Swiss Movement (the live album with "Compared to What" on it)

Herbie Hancock - Fat Albert Rotunda

Kenny Burrell - Midnight Blue

Favourite Sinatra: Sinatra at the Sands, with Count Basie's orchestra and a young Quincy Jones arranging.

And
not an album, but in memory of Oscar Peterson, his original live
performance of "Tenderly" when he was just 20 that blew everyone away...

OK, back in the world of Rock, when in Rome and all that:

- Derek and the Dominoes - In Concert (Eric at his peak, with a breathtaking version of "Why Does Love Got to be so Sad?" that easily eclipses the "Live at the Filmore" version)

- Spirit - the 12 Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus

- Zappa - Hot Rats

- Be Bop Deluxe - Sunburst Finish

- Jeff Beck Group - Rough and Ready

Hi,

U2 - Joshua Tree gets full attention - just bought remastered SE set.

Eva Cassidy - Songbird is worth listening to - loudly!

Springsteen - Lucky Town or Human Touch.

Chris Rea - Road To Hell.

Fine Young Cannibals - The Raw and the Cooked.

Hazel O'Connor - Breaking Glass

Must be more but these are the immediate ones I can think of.

Cheers,

Cofnchtr.

Au contraire... Off the top of my head, Jill Scott's Beautifully Human, A Tribe Called Quest's The Low End Theory and Angie Stone's Mahogany Soul all get plenty of play.

I have Marillion Misplaced Childhood on vinyl, played it once and put it straight back in its cover! Found it in a charity shop for £1.50. Good quality though!

Lol, it's OK I've moved on and found other things to be bemused by, like the whole cablophobic thing...

I've just realised that I always start Technique on track 2, so I'll withdraw that and swap it for:

The Blue Nile - A Walk Across the Rooftops

The Housemartins - London 0, Hull 4

OMD - Dazzle Ships

And my wife thinks I'm stuck in the 80s!

Hello, a real enjoyable post. But do you think albums are too long these days ? I think a single album should be no longer than 45 mins!

Mr.P. I think albums are too long nowadays is because they tend to fill them with duff...I wasn't like that in dear ole yesteryear (he said with a tear in his eye) where they concentrated on quality rather than quantity...

To be fair in yesteryear they would concentrate on quality as opposed to quantity because they could only fit about 22 minutes onto each side of a stereo LP before the playback quality started to suffer. Weaker tracks usually appeared as B sides on singles or just disappeared (to reappear on remastered CDs at a later date). These days with CD's holding over an hour of music you tend to get more filler because there is enough space to put it on the album.
