The cables.

Yeehah!

Me, I was going to say speakers but really thinking about it I'd have to say the Tom Evans Groove phono preamp.

My honest answer would probably be the subwoofer. :rockout:

It sounds so good with rave music, movies and computer gmes.

Not my picture, just one I found on the net.

They sound even better than they look. We could even follow almost all of the dialogue in the BBC's Jamaica Inn.

I love the look and intricate engineering of many turntables but HATE surface noise so much that I haven't bothered with vinyl for 15 years.

Speakers are the thing and my floorstanders are beyond compare. I'd have a floorstander over an equally good stand-mount any day.

Definately source, if you dont have a good source then the same *hit will be amplified to higher levels and the speakers will output them to your ears...

Interesting question that.

If longevity was the criterion, amp and speakers would win - for all the new models that arrive I doubt I would get more satisfaction per £ spent.

For fiddling, adjusting and trying out new things (hi-res files, HD, 4k), then source and display.

The moral of the story for me is spend good money on the "back end" and expect it to last, but watch what you spend on the "front", 'cos you will probably be changing it soon!

I can’t really get excited about the hardware side of digital sources. I can see that there’s a modicum of pleasure to be had from a well engineered CD mechanism, and some boxes have moderately attractive casework. But that’s about it

The job of digital hardware is to deliver bits without messing them up. It's not especially challenging or interesting.

DAC hardware is equally boring. It’s just chips in a box really.

The software side is for the most part equally dull. (I'm not counting online streaming services.)

The only thing that really interests me about a digital source is its streaming control interface. Some interfaces are cleverer and better designed than others (e.g. Sonos). Many are a mess.

I like the turntable - the mechanical aspect of it's operation makes it fascinating to operate and watch whilst it plays , such as the Michell Gyro SE with it's sprung suspension and weights suspended from the rotating platter.

I think it has to be my EMC1UP Cd player because I have had it the longest time (about eleven years ) and it is still the best source of music I have ever heard of any type or format and by a large margin , I will probably take it to my grave .

But then my new EC4.8 pre amp has been a revelation over the last few weeks and has been the biggest upgrade for a long time ,and as for my new AW180 monoblocks they have allowed me to hear so much more of what the EMC1UP and the EC4.8 can do .

Then there is my PMC PB1i's that can reproduce music in a way that seems so close to real live music, and without them the rest would be useless !

I dont think I should choose one favorite piece of equipment because it all works together as a whole , but I guess if you were to hold a gun to my head it would be my EMC1UP Cd player :)

You kept that quiet Electro!

Bet it sounds stunning!

I always think the speakers are the best bits and make the most impact , but I guess without all the little boxes and wires they are just dust collectors ..

You know me I don't like to make a fuss :)

The star of my new acquisition is the EC4.8 pre amp, it has made by far the biggest improvement .

I triedthe EC4.8 with my old AW120 DMB power amp before installing the new AW180 mono's and the improvement in transparency , detail , dynamic contrast and transient detail improved dramatically , in fact I think I would have been happy with that alone !

It is a seriously good pre amp that is actually two balanced mono pre amps in one box , see the picture in the link below .

https://www.audio-markt.de/neuheiten.php?N_ID=7224&Wer=Vertrieb&HID=0&request=detail

Adding the AW180 monoblocks made a smaller but still very obvious improvement especially in the dynamics department at higher volumes and a large step up in image / soundstage size and depth .

Overall a massive step closer to live sounding music at home which is what I have always wanted .

So yes I am quite pleased with them :)

I bought the EC4.8 and AW180 mono's from Mike and Caroline at Audio Destination Ex demo .

I still have my EC4.7 AW120 at the moment but I am finding it really hard to put them up for sale , I am so attached to them they are like part of the family , I have owned them for thirteen years and they have given me so much pleasure . :)

I had the AW120 serviced and upgraded by Nss about three years ago but the EC4.7 is untouched , I might build another sytem with them or just keep them and add to the pile of other stuff I can't bear to part with .

I am such a hoarder still have my old Mission 777 / 776 pre /power amps in the loft that I bought 33 years ago :)
