Had a reasonable haul of LPs for Christmas . Most of them are what many people would call " difficult music " , or unlistenable .

Here's my little list :

Sigur Ros - INNI

Oneohtrix Point Never - Returnal

Tim Hecker - Ravedeath 1972

Fay Ray - Contact You

and quite a rare one from the 1970s Gunter Schikert - Samtvogel

I can say I know none of these, which is great as it shows that we all have such varied taste. It would be boring if we all liked the same music.

DIB. Hope you had a great evening and are not suffering too much this afternoon.
I may have a trip sometime to your Ruguely shop and see what they have in stock Saturday.

Lost ,

Having seen the music that you listen to I am not surprised that you haven't heard of any of artists in my list ( this is not meant to be a derogatory comment , even if it may be taken as such) . Up until a few weeks ago I hadn't heard of a couple of them myself . You Tube has alot to answer for . Having been listening to music since the mid-Seventies , I listened to mostly mainstream rock , like you , I think , but have always been open to new stuff that isn't mainstream . This has led me down some interesting alleys , some of them deadend . But it has always been interesting . Whether I'll be still listening to this latest batch of music in a year or two's time , who knows .

I guess you are talking about " Those Old Records" in Rugeley ? I also fancy a trip there sometime , but not at the moment as my record budget has been well and truely spent for sometime !

Currently listening to "The Family That Plays Together" by Spirit .

Nick

Nick No offence taken, just keep enjoying what you're listening too.

Had a vinyl session and a half this morning. Three audiophile discs from Clarity Recordings, 'One step plating, 2 single sided discs, 180gs, simple twin mic recordings':

Redwood Symphony, Stravinsky's 'Petrushka'

Claudia Gomez, 'Salamander'

Mary Stallings, Fine and Mellow

. . . then:

Dire Straits, 'Love over Gold'

. . . and finally, some Jamaican music:

'Staggering Heights', some of the musicians credited; Style Scott, Crucial Tony, Congo Ashanti Roy, Prince Far I, Fatfingers, Deadly Headley. With names like that you can imagine its 12" of musical fun!

Now on the Mary Stallings CD of 'Fine Mellow', cant type and jump up and down for vinyl!

1) CSN Demos

Forgotten about this one. Came out a couple of years ago, I think. Quite brilliant. But it made me crave the missing "Y", so next up this morning were selections from the four album 180g box of Neil Young's first four solo LPs.

Neil Young, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, After The Goldrush and Harvest.

This led to one of my most listened to old albums this year:

Highway 61 Revisited - Bob Dylan

Ive got a Inspire Eclypse http://www.inspirehifi.co.uk/page8/page8.html.

using a Orofon MC Rondo Red cartridge. I auditioned it against an upgraded Linn Sp12 and there was a huge difference.

its still sounds bright a little toppy on some tracks. but most interestingly, I thought I had a pair of speakers which controlled the bass brilliantly with my CDs, but, there are occasions when they lose control with vinyl.

The soundstage is massive, almost endless

It could be that Im not used to listening to vinyl yet.

Grace For Drowning - Steven Wilson

Getting better and better with each listen, like a good album should do.

Looks like a great deck, never heard one in action.

My ears are increasinlgy inclined towards vinyl, and take a bit of re-adjusting to the digital stuff. I still enjoy both but the last few years have shifted back to black. For good. Well, until I upgrade my DAC, then it may be more of a 50/50 split.

I'm in the throes of a large extension & renovation of my house, and today whilst clearing a room in readiness for knocking though in the new year came across an assortment of mostly 80's/90's LPs & 12inch singles. I knew of their existence but I'd forgotten their exact whereabouts. Loads of mediocre stuff but a few gems and oddities amongst the dross. Vinyl time is usually 8pm onwards, so will clean and play some of the following tonight:

1) Red Army Ensemble

2) Us - Peter Gabriel

3) Force - A Certain Ratio

4) Psychocandy & Darklands - JAMC

The other 70 odd discs have gone into the great vinyl rack in the sky (ie) the loft. At least until Feb/March when the work on the house should(!) be complete and a much longed for dedicated music room is up and running.

Wakefield's (my hometown of the last 20 years) finest!

Plus, he's recorded loads of brilliant stuff in the few decades, some of it at my Uncle's studio, Fairview, near Hull.

I was privileged to watch a few recording sessions for what turned out to be the Gillcover & The Monkey album, amongst others. A fantastic musician and lovely bloke.

Shameless name drop over!!

I can't remember whether it was on this forum or another, but the story of Bill Nelson from the 70's and 80's was discussed and it's a heartbreaking one in terms of how the guy was just mercilessly ripped off throughout his career by various record companies, managers etc. A fairly typical tale it has to be said from the period, but no less shocking. I don't think he made a penny, and earns no royalties from those Be Bop Deluxe days to this day.

I believe his band of followers are some of the most hardcore and devoted out there, and as you say when ever I've heard him talk or reminisce he comes across as a really decent bloke who has always played exactly what he wanted to with little or no compromise.

Respect is due to Bill Nelson.

I'm playing this now..

1) Us - Peter Gabriel (Side 1). Didn't really enjoy this. Will give it another try sometime.

2) Can Cladders - The High Llamas

Slightly pointless exercise in MOR meets The Beach Boys with 90's production values. Makes Belle & Sebastian sound like one of the bands Big Chris listens to.

3) Punch The Clock - Elvis Costello & The Attractions.

Not as spectacular as it's predecessor, Imperial Bedroom, (how could it be), but stuffed full of great moments both lyrically and musically. Includes Costello's own take on Shipbuilding with Chet Baker on phased/fazed trumpet. Nearly as good as Robert Wyatt's cover, but not quite. And also Let Them Talk, surely one of the great openings to any album.

4) Tom's Diner - Various Artists

Supremely annoying. And I like Suzanne Vega.

King Crimson In the Court of the Crimson King

A birthday present: 200gm pressing, mastering approved by Robert Fripp. Comes with a couple of 320kbps downloads too.

Sounds outstanding (where it doesn't sound like stumbling into someone's migraine).

Magnum On a Storytellers Night, a big sound and sounds great on my system.
Olde England's skies, turn black and then cry could sum up the weather today here.

Steely Dan greatest hits, a group I was never into until I got married although they always played Haitian Divorce at the club I hung out at. My wife is a big Steely Dan fan.

Thought I'd finish the year with a classic and they don't get much better for me than this.
Happy new year to everyone and may vinyl continue to flourish. Rock On :rockout: :rockout:

Remember: Too much to drink and vinyl don't go, unless you fancy a new stylus.
