Change of tempo tonight with Cat Stevens Teaser and the Firecat. Either somethings happened with my ears or I've tweaked my system cos everything sounds better than ever.

Stayed with Cat Stevens again tonight followed by another play of the Al Stewart.
My wife informs me the Cat Stevens musical Moonflower is opening in Australia shortly, although I like his songsIi'm not sure if they will suit a musical. I bet my favourite track Sad Lisa will not feature.

The Allman Brothers - Live at the Fillmore East is by far and away their best . I've been a fan of theirs for 35 years and me and my air guitar have got this double album note perfect !

Nick

And yet my favourite Allman's track is Old Before My Time from Hittin The Note released in 2003.

Prompted by Radio Paradise playing the title track, I've just put on this early 70's classic rock album..

We have a local "Rock" radio station that seems to have "Freebird", "Stairway to Heaven" and "The Boys Are Back In Town" in a constant loop, absolutely soul-sappingly predictable radio. Never listen to it. The chances of ever hearing Robin Trower on it are practically zero.

1) Hatful Of Hollow - The Smiths

2) Desire - Bob Dylan

3)The World Won't Listen - The Smiths

4) The Queen Is Dead - The Smiths

It's like being in my final year of Uni all over again. (1986). Does anyone own the recent vinyl remasters of The Smiths LPs and the originals? I've got the originals and I'm curious how the new batch compare.

Interesting you mention that. I just got the 2009 180g re-issue of "Strangeways Here We Come" today, and it is very good indeed. Marr supervised the re-mastering and he did a damn fine job to my ears. TBH I'm not sure what they could have done to improve matters on the most recent "re-issue, re-package, re-package" ;)

I'm probably going to get The Queen is Dead & Meat is Murder from the same series on the strength of this record.

The wife has gone out so followed the earlier posting with another play of B Sides Themselves, turned the volume up and Let The Blood Flow, followed with

180g
Next some Wishbone me thinks.

Listened to a great version of I Heard It Through The Grapevine by Creedence Clearwater Revival on Planet Radio the other night.

Thanks for the info'. Sounds good.

Just to clarify, are you comparing it to the original vinyl?

Are the 2009 remasters the same as the recent box set, I wonder?

As you say, it's "re-issue, repackage, repackage" all the way with both Moz and The Smiths' back catalogues.

No, for some reason I originally bought Strangeways on cassette & when that (inevitably) got chewed up in the car stereo I bought it on CD, so I can't make a direct comparison there, but compared to the CD the 2009 vinyl sounds fantastic, way more open & natural. I remember reading that Marr had re-mastered them to remove some of the 80s excesses that were present on the originals.

I've got the other albums on original (and well played) vinyl though so it'll be interesting to make a direct comparison when I get the 2009 versions. You can generally get the 2009 ones in NM or EX+ on the bay for less than a fiver (+ P&P of course), although the MP3 download has usually been used. You can still get them brand new for about £15 with the MP3 code still intact.

I think the newest re-issue has been re-mastered yet again. I suppose they have to justify the price somehow.

Following on from other thread, I've been back under the stairs and pulled out this one from the Allman Brothers Band.

The sleeve looks lovely propped up next to the Xmas tree.

A music evening tonight. Everybody out except me and the dog, so I thought to myself who do I love but haven't played in ages?

Answer, Graham Parker and the Rumour. Top, top live band in the late 70's. An absolutely must-see band at the time.

Cheers DIB, I love it. I might treat it to a nicer cartridge in the new year, but TBH it sounds really nice at the moment so it would just be tarting around really.

I'm actually after a rough-ish (but working) IIX to do up, I have some offcut lengths of black walnut & I want to see what it would look like if I replaced the black ash with it. If it works out well I'll convert mine!

Tonight's fare, so far:

1) Sign O'The Times - Prince

Some of it sounds terribly dated, synth-stabs and nauseous drum machines, but there are still many wonders to behold.

Chief amongst them, the fantastic minimalist title track and the tight, bonkers funk of Ballad Of Dorothy Parker. Standout twenty odd years ago and to this day is the big rock number, I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man. Notwithstanding the faintly ridiculous lyric about taking the moral high ground over a one-night stand, it's infectious pop-rock at it's glorious best. Spawned many cover versions, including a cool take by Eels and a more rhapsodic celebration by my heroes, My Morning Jacket.

2) Dylan & The Dead

Another oft-derided album by two fantastic artists. I really like it, plus it refutes the notion that live albums are futile (which I agree they mostly are), because this captures something that neither party could muster in the studio.
