When I heard the Bowie song Blackstar it made me think of Scott Walker too, a more tuneful take on Drift. I really liked Sue (In A Season of Crime) also. So Dave does "jazz"'stylings. Looking forward to the album.

That track title rings a bell, was it the one he released before? If there is an album to come, I'll definitely be buying it.

Now listening to side two of 'Low'.

Yeah, I heard that Bowie tune. If the rest is anything as good as that, could be a classic

Don't know if there's a new album planned, do you?

'Blackstar' is due for release 8th January

When he's good, he's very good. As it stands, my 'big 3' are 'Hunky Dory', 'Spiders' and 'Aladdinsane'. I like his kinda 'edgey' stuff. 'Blackstar' on the face of it, seems to be of that ilk.

Over the last week a varied selection

Prefab Sprout - Crimson/Red

Echo & The Bunnymen - Ocean Rain

PJ Harvey - Let England Shake

Gary Numan - The Pleasure Principle

ZZ Top - Eliminator

The Jesus And Mary Chain - Darklands

Savages - Silence Yourself

Prince Fatty vs Mungo's Hi-Fi

The Horrors - Luminous

Depeche Mode - The Singles 81-85

Songhoy Blues - Re-Covered ep

Cocteau Twins - Blue Bell Knoll

Portishead - Live, Roseland NYC

Jeff Buckley - Grace

Eno*Hyde - Someday World

Anna Calvi - Anna Calvi

Nitin Sawhney - Prophesy

The Gigi Gryce Quintet - The Rat Race Blues

Miles Davis featuring Sonny Rollins -- Dig

Sonny Clark - Cool Struttin' (brilliant Blue Note)

Having being playing the above it is very interesting how those 80s albums still hold up, none are on 180g audiophile vinyl nor spread out over 2 discs yet all produce a wonderful sound, bass nice and tight, vocals crisp all well produced. Just makes you think about the current fad and how it is all 'audiophile', another reason to ramp the costs up? A well produced album will always be good. Yes I am lucky I get to play them through a good system, clean them in the Knosti and store them in polylined sleeves.

I have to agree those 80s albums do sound so good especially the Mute Records Depeche Mode and Yazoo records. I did own these in the 80s but were on cassette as I had a ghetto blaster and when I bought my first seperates HiFi , I had a cassette deck. I have spent the last 8 years replacing all my cassettes with records.

...but this list contains some non-vinyl items.

Vashti Bunyan: various youtube clips of her early singles. I shall be busting a gut to track these down so let's call them potential vinyl that I'm playing. Gentle, lovely songs with that 60's feel.

'Getz/Gilberto.'

Jefferson Airplane: 'Crown Of Creation.' + a few TMQ Airplane vinyl bootlegs.

Cecil Taylor: 'Unit Structures.' Difficult. Very Difficult. Like it though.

Lee Morgan: 'In Search Of The New Land.' Brilliant Blue Note...Lee's best perhaps.

Sonny Rollins: 'Volume 1' + 'Volume 2' Brilliant Blue Notes.

Wayne Shorter: 'Juju' You guessed it...a brilliant Blue Note.

Nirvana: 'All Of Us.'

Nirvana: ' The Story Of Simon Simpoath.'

Blossom Toes: 'We Are Ever So Clean.' A far more enjoyable record than the one they were trying to emulate, 'Seargant Pepper's etc' You can't be serious? Oh I am.

Blossom Toes: 'If Only For A moment.' Neglected and wonderful.

Jim, you really have a marvellous jazz (and other "genres" too - I hate that word!) collection. I often scurry to online listening to check out the (many) titles I don't know.

Currently playing:

Moonshine

Birthday Blues

As we've discussed previously Bert Jansch really was a captivating talent.

Haven't played Moonshine for ages. Who the heck is Garry Boyle? His electric playing on a couple of songs is wonderful complement to Bert's acoustic picking.

Thanks, Charlie. I guess it's because I've been collecting since I was 14 so I focus on the 60'/70's primarily and I realise that my post 90's collection is rather weedy. I usually listen to the more modern stuff on youtube, but I have no inclination to collect it. If a record turned up on the various markets stalls I buy stuff from, I'd buy it though ie Sufjan Stevens or Devendra Banhart.

Gary Boyle played with a lot of jazz musicians in the early 70's and is primarily a jazz/fusion guitarist; he appeared as a session man on many records and if I'm not mistaken plays on Python Lee Jackson's 'In A Broken Dream' which I thought was a terrific single.

The two Bert's you list are both lovely records, especially 'Moonshine' which must be one of his very best. If you haven't listened to 'Avocet', which is entirely instrumental, then give it a go: it was Bert's favourite record. It's beautifully played and very atmospheric. Finding a vinyl copy of 'Avocet' is pretty difficult though because I think it was released solely in Holland: I don't think it goes for that much, maybe £20/£30.

Bert is a god; i treasure his records, along with Charlie Parker's above all others...oh and the records of Pearls Before Swine are pretty special too. There's a band for you to google!!!

I think you'd like the Blossom Toes records, but beware: they're £800 each!!! They've been reissued though...finding a mono copy of 'We Are Ever So Clean' is something that would literally take my breath away. Ha! How sad is that?!!

Lee Morgan's 'Search For The New Land' is brilliant...try it.

Hi Jim,

Thanks for the listening suggestions. I'm vaguely familiar with the Blossom Toes via a Mojo or other magazine compilation but I've never gone beyond that, yet. The Lee Morgan album is cued up to play right now, digitally.

I'm keen to hear Avocet and will be tracking that down as soon as funds allow.

Update: just played the Lee Morgan album for the first time. Even on first listen I can hear so much wonderful music. By turns, contemplative, beguiling and joyful. It's leapt from must hear to must have in a flash.

I notice it's a 1964 recording, so are we safe with primitive stereo or does a superior mono mix exist?

Plastic Penguin mentioned them on another thread so I thought I'd give them a spin today

10cc Sheet Music, The Original Soundtrack and How Dare You. There's some excellent tracks on these 3 albums.

Specials: limited edition white vinyl. Brand new and fresh out of the cellophane.

3 tracks in and it's sounding very good so far!

EDIT: Both sides now played and I thoroughly enjoyed it! Really good album if you're into Ska. Also opening and playing a new record and playing it for the first time was a nice experience. :)

I do find myself often slavering over Jim's and Charlie's playlists, especially the jazz.

A few LPs today:
Salisbury Cathedral Choir directed by Christopher Dearnley
Temple Church Choir – Music from the Service at Temple Church
(not my choice, those two; I offered to digitise some of my father's ancient church music LPs for him)
Sexwitch – Sexwitch
Songhoy Blues – Music in Exile
Joanna Newsom – Divers
Courtney Barnett – Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I just Sit
Bass Communion – Molotov & Haze

Blimey BBB, that's one heck of a soundtrack for a tired man. Just leave Gabriel out of the mix next time, to hold off the snooze!

For 27 years I've only ever heard this on the first-issue 1980s CD, but yesterday I saw the LP for £1 in a charity-shop record bin and the temptation was too much to resist. Turns out it's in great condition, sounds like it's been played very rarely or always on decent equipment. Totally different listening-experience to the CD.
