I saw Mick Hucknall walking down Street An Pol in St Ives, Cornwall...that's the closest I've ever come to his music.

Jim, I implore, nay demand you allow your ears to meet the mightily majestic Mick's take on Sooner Or Later. It's on a Chimes Of Freedom Amnesty CD - million tracks Bob covers fest! Also features the most grotesque cover I've heard of Zim: Seal & Jeff Beck mutilating Like A Rolling Stone.

Ok Charlie, because it's you I will go forth into these murky waters. I may be gone some time.

BBB mentioning that one of them was expensive sent me scurrying to popsike.

I was thinking more of the 'O' Rang album(s). I have a reissue of Laughing Stock, missed the original.

Can I just list anything I'm listening to here, vinyl or not?

Thanks, I will. *good*

It's not a bad idea, and I wouldn't object, but others might. It's a nice corner of the forum here and I can't be bothered to post in the other thread.

I doubt that pics of my dinner will interest anybody: I'm a vegan. Yeah, I know...tree-hugging hippy, but you knew that already. Look:

Love: 'Love' I like this first lp just as much as 'Forever Changes.'

Love: 'Da Capo.'

Love: 'The Third Coming Of Love.' Vinyl boot. Good stuff.

Spirit: 'Clear' and '12 Dreams Of Doctor Sardonicus.'

Jefferson Airplane: 'Crown Of Creation. ' Mono, but it's a fold-down so no big deal.

Grateful Dead: 'Anthem Of The Sun.' The long-deleted original mix. A wonderful clattering mess.

The Band: 'Music From Big Pink.'

American Music Club: 'California.' Great record. Brilliant songs amidst guitar heaven.

American Music Club: 'United Kingdom.' Equally brilliant.

Don Rendell/Ian Carr Quintet: 'Change Is.' The only one I've got on record...I dream of finding 'Shades Of Blue' and 'Dusk Fire' but they're both £1,000+ lps. Would I pay? Show me one and I'll tell ya. Dunno, it's a difficult one. Probably not; but then again, I could always sell my house or my grandma's wooden leg.

Hi Jim,

Now that's what I call music, bar Mark Eitzel who I, perhaps uncharitbably, regard as a cult-ish artist without any of the artistic attributes.

Great swathe of Love, Airplane & The Dead. Is it Haight-Astbury theme park recreation in sunny Nottinghamshire today?

Haven't played Talk Talk's Spirit or Laughing Stock for a while, I wonder if they can tempt me away from Hib-Priest. My local record dealer keeps dangling various Bob and Beatles monos in front of me in exchange for these LPs in their original form.

Hi Charlie, yep, those American west coast bands were my first love and I still enjoy listening to them. I'm afraid it's always Haight-Asbury, before the tourists and media got hold of, it in my head. All that free-thinking, experimentation and, er, drug-usage! Still the haight of radical and freewheelin' creativity in my book of the dead. They'll never lose their appeal and the Airplane will always be my favourite band because of their great playing and politics. Great songs, too. And Grace, let's not forget Grace.

Although I'm not one to offer advice to anybody about anything, I'm going to offer you some advice: don't trade your Talk Talk lps; these will grow in value whereas Beatles and Bob monos seem to be pretty static in terms of value and may even have peaked. I guess the Bob mono and Beatles mono boxes, plus rereleases of their mono lps has had an effect on the market. I come across lots of Bob and Beatles monos at my fave market stall every Saturday; they're in various states of disrepair of course, but a fair few are vey good/excellent; on the contrary, I never come across the Talk Talk records. In short, you'll find it easier to get copies of those 60's records than the 90's rarities. It's worth noting that Neil Young's 'Broken Arrow' and Tom Petty's 'Wildflowers', both 90's records, go for ridiculous amounts of money these days.

Re American Music Club: listen to the 2 lps I listed; he's far more than a cult artist, he's a sobbing, howling and heartbroken genius on these records. Mind you, I think the gutarist, Vudi, makes these records great: he's sublime and powerful and the perfect foil for Eitzel.

Hi Jim,

I'm all for your Haight of the mindset, it's where it was at for awhile, but as you know it all vapourised and became a dead parody of itself. Like most social-cultural movements. [Enough pontificating in the style of your Uni dissertation - Pseud's Corner Ed].

I won't sell my original Talk Talk LPs. For some reason I've got two original Edens and two Laughing Stocks, all in excellent condition. But yes, you're right, I've got more chance of seeing a slew of Bob&Beatles early pressings, than all those late 1980s to 2005 period albums. I was pleasantly surprised by the possible value of Kate Bush's The Red Shoes, mid-period solo Plant, The Seahorses(!), Goldfrapp, Sonic Youth various, Gene and even Ferry's Dylanesque, amongst others. (I own all bar the latter, but that goes for silly money simply because of its year of issue).

Even Moz's post Viva Hate originals go for silly money too. Cf. Maladjusted, Southpaw, Quarry in particular.

I think that's OK, as long as you preface each non-vinyl item with a grovelling apology.

Okay, sorry and all that, but my last hour or so of sounds are:

by turns, mewling, non-puking, playful children

roasted vegetables fizzling

two spoilt pedigree cats (not mine) leaping and dallying with a wasp they'd ensnared on the stairs.

Ping, ping, ping of ex-wife texting our London-abiding daughter.

Enough of this quotidian gloom, enough. Now back to Bob. . .

starting with:

John Wesley Harding (mono)

On the American Music Club front, I used to have both Everclear and Mercury, but both have been sold during poverty stricken periods in my past. *nea*

I remember really liking Everclear, but not being so sure about Mercury. Wish I still owned them though.

Thinking back, I've seen AMC sometime somewhere a long time ago. It was because of a girl. Both gig and female turned out to be cul de sacs.

I'd certainly agree with you, BBB: 'Everclear' is a brilliant record whereas 'Mercury' didn't really do much for me; in fact, it was the first American Music Club album that i felt less than enthusiastic about. I think 'Everclear' was their last great record. Some of his solo stuff is good too; well, worth a listen at least.

As for 'John Wesley Harding' well I think it's my favourite Bob Dylan record. I may change my mind tomorrow and regret posting this, but it's certainly in my top 5. Mono is the way to go with this one, Charlie...only my opinion of course.

I'd like to get hold of some of Nucleus's LPs, but they're expensive enough. Haven't heard any of Carr's earlier music.

I think 'Mercury' was on a major label, so understandably the rot started to set in. Some bands just shouldn't go near major labels.

I've just looked at the tracklisting for 'Everclear', and it was 'Rise' that made me buy the album, but every track was great. If I listened to it now, I think I'd find it a little overearnest, a trait I used to love, but one that I'm uncomfortable listening to these days.

I remember buying a Hut/Virgin CD sampler http://www.discogs.com/Various-Signed-Sealed-Delivered-1/release/2533043, and there was a track on it by a band called Idaho, which was kind of in the same territory as AMC and RHP. I found an album by them many years ago in a charity shop, but it wasn't so good, but that track was a definite corker - wish I could remember the name of it.

Found it. http://www.discogs.com/Idaho-Year-After-Year/master/301999 (looking at the value, wish I hadn't sold it now)

The track I liked was the first one, 'God's Green Earth', and it still sounds great.

Oh, I was rather enjoying the ambient soundscape. Shame you had to spoil it. [sticks out tongue]

Squabbling children getting ready for achool

The ever rapid boil of one of those stupid uber-silly kettles. Don't ask! They just annoy me.

The crinkle-rustle of the foil on a packet of Sainsbury's Assam tea bags

The satisfying slotting of 379 hi-res Bob songs on a USB stick going into my player. . . spoiled it again!!!
