Watched Jules et Jim this morning

Charlie, you never answered my earlier question about joining the WHF Film Club.

I will resist the Groucho Marx via Woody Allen line about not wanting to belong to any club that would have me as a member - not very successful resistance, sorry.

One of my close friends is a film fanatic and has a system to be rather envious of, so I know how good the experience can be at home, however I really, really have a terribly selective (everyone else I know says "elitist" is nearer the mark, including my friend who will watch just about anything from cerebral to crud) view of films.

I hate the idea of giving into something for 2-3 hours unless he's recommended it, when I could be listening to music or failing that reading or failing that watching football. My only recent-ish forays have been Whiplash and Love & Mercy, both of which I enjoyed.

I'm a drama teacher, I love reading, writing stories, theatre oh God, I generally hate films.

Does that make any sense? Remember, I am an idiot.

There are things that I would give into for 2 or 3 hours, but this is not the forum to discuss that sort of carry-on. Charlie, I agree with you entirely re films: I can suspend my disbelief when watching plays, even children's plays, but, somehow, I can't do it with many films, especially Hollywood films. Short films interest me more; they make a point, often have imaginative direction and get out. Maybe I just don't have the necessary attention span for a full-length film. My age, dear. I also find the amount of money spent on films to be obscene, but, then again, I feel the same way about English football. Having said that, I always enjoyed teaching film as part of English or Media, but I was more interested in looking at short extracts with a focus on shots, camera angles and filmic technique.

No. *biggrin*

There are certainly some of those on this forum, you, Charlie, are definitely not one of them.

Have a look in at the film club though, the films we choose tend to be a lot more interesting than your average Hollywood blockbuster.

Not tempted by a black-and-white Polish drama about a nun (our current selection) then, Charlie?

Currently listening to the wonderful Cannonball Adderley Quintet Live in San Francisco, but on CD. Looking forward to getting back to playing some more records tomorrow. It's been too long!

The b/w Polish nun film rings a bell, now you mention it. I've seen so many films with that description!!! What's it called?

Ida

Sounds riveting *biggrin*

It may be a bit slow, but it's defintiely more exciting than the latest David Gilmour album. *blum3*

As Big Bern says, it's called Ida. It came out last year and won a lot of awards. Worth a watch, I'd say.

Pale Saints - In Ribbons

One of the best albums on the 4AD label ever, and certainly better than any Lush album. *bomb*

I agree that it is one of the best 4AD albums; I think if you had said that it was better than any My Bloody Valentine record I would have agreed with you, the latter being one of the most ridiculously overrated bands working within this genre. I know they were on Creation but I think the comparison is appropriate. On the other hand, Lush were criminally underrated and scorned by the NME as liggers and party animals but 'Spooky' and 'Split' were brilliant guitar records with great songs. Who cares about better or best or greatest records lists? I'm just glad I can listen to 'In Ribbons' and the Lush albums. You provocative ars*, BBB!!!

I had a listen to Tony McPhee (Two Sides Of) and....wasn't expecting that! The second part could have been Hawkwind! I like Tony McPhee, and I like Hawkwind, just seemed a bit...odd.

I must admit to never hearing either of those Lush albums, but sometimes you just have to be provocative to get a response. Not many people know that Pale Saints album, side two is great, side one is truly awesome, and I really want people to check it out.

I'm a bit of a fan of 'Loveless', and although I've only played it once, the latest album sounded pretty good to me too, so I can't agree with you on MBV, Jim.

I'm quite confused by the pouplarity of Ride, and especially the album 'Nowhere'. I bought it when it came out, but if I try and listen to it now, it just makes me cringe. Now they are an overrated band. I still like the track 'Unfamiliar' though. *smile*

Now listening to:

Gang Of Four - Entertainment

Bauhaus - In A Flat Field
