Hi Jim,

Yes, Bongo Fury for me too. Alongside the legal and boot versions of Shiny Beast/Bat Chain Puller.

Good luck with MMJ. The defining voices of my long listening life are, in no partilcular order, Bob, Moz, The Wilsons and Jim James. I forgot to throw in The Allman Brothers and Lynard Skynard too in the stew of influences. I think MMJ transcend them all. Honestly!

I'll be interested in your initial response/comments.

Listening to the epic double LP sprawl of:

Evil Urges - MMJ

Ok, Charlie, here is my initial reaction to MMJ. Firstly, this is one strange band! So many disparate influences but somehow it all holds together. Most odd. Having said that, I think they are absolutely fascinating and brilliant. I'll youtube again this evening and I'm looking forward to discovering more about them. So far I've listened to 'Z' full album and watched bits of 'Okonokos, the full concert., which is wonderful. I'm just hoping my record bloke can get some of this stuff but he can get his hands on most things.I see all the influences you mentioned including those last two you've just posted. I've only really taken in the music, not the words but it's going to take a while. I wonder how I missed out on this band; I was probably in a jazz phase and not buying much else. It's just so hard to keep up with everything that's good. I'll write a bit more when I've listened to some other stuff. I'll give 'Evil Urges' a go later on. Thanks for recommending them; I think they are going to become one of my favourite bands.

I get the feeling you're hard to please

Music wise, yes, maybe.

You seem to like an element of chaos?

Not sure about that, you keep trying to pin that one on me, but my record collection has easy listening, country & western, and pop music, but I do like the unusual, it's true.

Keep trying to pin it on you? I've only mentioned it once before. Anyway, chaos is no bad thing, just not my thing, generally speaking. I seem to recall that Mars Volta have a chaotic element, your thing?

Actually, chaos is probably the wrong word, uncomfortable is a better one ;)

Quite right, not my thing either :)

I know you like Nick Drake, so I'm assuming you like some folk, at least. I'm rather fond of Roy Harper, have you heard any? I've got around half a dozen of his, and can't wait to get my next system up and running to give them a spin, even though some of them are the worst for wear. Anyway, try this to get a flavour. I'd be interested to know what you think...

Cheers...Freddy

My Folk music collection begins and ends with Nick Drake, actually, I don't regard him as Folk. I don't know Roy Harper's stuff at all, so can't comment on him, but I have a general dislike/pathalogical hatred of English Folk music, particularly the stuff sung with that god awful affected vocal style, both old and new.

Roy Harper is an occasional genius. 'Another Day' is beautiful as is all of 'Flat Baroque And Beserk.' 'Stormcock' is, of course, his most consistent and best record-a thing of rare beauty. He's a friend of a friend who introduced me to him: nice guy.Whilst I'm name-dropping and annoying everybody, I also met Nick Drake, again through a mutual friend, actually a friend of John Martyn's, at his house in Hastings. Nick sat there with very long legs and said nothing for about three hours. As legend would suggest, he didn't really seem there. Sorry for name-dropping; I don't know anybody else. Actually, I do, but that's for another day.

Yes. He also had a song dedicated to him, on Led Zep iii, him and Page are chums...

He didn't sing on 'Dark Side Of The Moon'; he sang on 'Wish You Were Here.' The song was 'Have A Cigar.'

No harm with a bit of name dropping. Arthur Askey once jumped in front of me in at a taxi rank at Manchester's Piccadilly Hotel many years ago.

Beat that.

Meanwhile, back on the decks..

High quality name dropping is allowed. :)

Laughs! Thanks BBB.

So who else do you know Jim?

Cynthia and Julian Lennon. From when I was a kid. I put Julian to bed once! It's a long story. I'll type it when I've got more time. It was round at my grandma's house who lived next door to Cynthia's best friend who had recently moved down from Liverpool.
