Bookshelf Vs Floorstanders, no context in my experience.

Unfortunately, the effects of stands can vary pretty wildly - you can make or break a speaker's performance with the wrong stand.

Oh, I don't doubt that a completely unsuitable stand might not work too well. I've been using Mission Stancette stands for some time now - no plans to change them - and they've been excellent. Yes, I could blow £500 or more, easily, but at the moment, they'll do fine. I'll let the tweakery take its course with/for others on this one. If I do pick up some new ones, they'll likely come from used models.

The Stancettes were ridiculously good for the money they were.

To be a tad contrary I use a pair of Partington SuperDreadnoughts (part of a speaker package deal) which replaced my part-filled Atacama SE24 stands and can hear no discernible difference.
However, height is critical to be sure.
Admittedly neither of these are, what I would call, cheap.

I have bookshelf speakers. They are Klipsch the sevens. I put them on stands that are filled with kitty litter. Also, on top of the stands is Auralex decoupling foam. On the bottom of the stands there are rubber feet and on top of the stands, under the foam, there are rubber feet in each corner. Without a doubt this cleaned up the audio from my experience. Also moving them away from the wall a bit did wonders too. Doing this, cleaned up my audio immensely. YMMV.

Edit: I have a svs pb 2000 pro sub connected to the klipsch. In my small room, this setup does the job and then some. The stands I used seem to have tightened up the sound eliminated boominess and hallowness....to me.
