Hi Jim,

Your description of other departments view of themselves certainly rings true at my place too. ,

Anyway, back to what truly matters, the music!!

Did you buy both GLB on vinyl at the time? I very much regret my vinyl-buying hiatus which ran from around 1992/3 to 2004. With a few exceptions purchased at fairs and charity shops my 4,000 plus CD collection occupied my buying. I've gone back since and bought vinyl released in that period. Hence my question regarding Grant Lee Buffalo.

I've got most of those CDs transferred to my computer now and the actual discs are stored away. For the last decade or so vinyl has gradually re-established itself as my favourite format.

Hi Charlie

Yes, I bought both on vinyl. I too was lured by the new CD format and, at one time prior to the introduction of CD, I even bought mostly tapes although I have absolutely no idea why. Maybe my record player had broken or something; I think that that was probably it. I think I bought a mixture of cds and records for 4 or so years but, for me, the shiny new remastered blah blah format just didn't do it. I think they sounded ok, if a bit loud and toppy, but I was old enough to remember and own some of the originals and, I don't know, kind of revere original copies. I went looking for record shops, specialist second-hand shops and market traders because nothing beats finding original copies of records that you've heard are brilliant: the artwork, the labels, the historical authenticity etc; I don't care if it's a bit battered, I'll love it anyway. I also enjoy scrubbing up battered copies and trying to get a decent sound from them so not all of my rarities are mint, many, in fact, are probably VG. I prefer battered human beings too and liked helping less academic kids when I taught. Same sort of thing really.

Having said that, I've paid ridiculous sums of money for mint psychedelic, folk and British jazz classics plus, my real numero uno, rare mono copies when the mix is different. I've also forked out loads for New York Blue Notes and other jazz labels. If I could find a stash of Greensleeves label reggae releases, I'd probably remortgage my house!

Since retiring, I'm having to buy less although occasionally I go mad and spend a few hundred quid and don't eat. Ha! That's why I need a part-time job! I'm a vinyl junky through and through and the dealers are very happy when they see me: they tell me so!

Sorry for rambling on. I thought it might be of interest to you. I know you have the bug too!

Hi Jim,

That wasn't a ramble but a sincere ode to vinyl. I like your stance on "battered human beings" too. Taught a few of those today.

It's always good to read about someone else's immersion in a shared passion. You surely have a mighty record collection in scope and size. Long may it continue.

No vinyl played tonight. Instead we watched the Blu-ray of the Bob Dylan 30th Anniversary concert. I haven't seen it all the way through for years.

I'd completely forgotten how great the Clancy brothers & Richie Haven's contributions were. Also good to see Neil Young rip through Watchtower and Bob himself deliver taut and uncompromising versions of It's Alright and North Country Girl.

Tonight's toppermost of the poppermost:

The Durutti Column-LC

The Durutti Column-Another Setting

Donald Byrd-Caricatures

Blondie-Plastic Letters

Country Joe And The Fish-Together

Mike Westbrook Concert Band-Love Songs. The best British jazz album of all-time? Dunno, but it's one of them:soulful, passionate and great playing. Top tunes, too.

Today:

Mike Westbrook Concert Band-Love Songs. Love this record.

Traffic-Heaven Is In Your Mind (mono reissue, Sundazed)

The Durutti Column-The Return Of The Durutti Column.

Beaver And Krause-All Good Men. Check the sleeve:

This record is stylistically all over the place (ragtime, ballads, Moog, field recordings of native Americans, soppy love songs, JS Bach) which I find fascinating. Average reviews at the time but it's one of my favourite records. Just don't ask me why.

The Famous Jug Band-Chameleon.

This time it's the album that nobody knows, but they'll know all the songs...

Pandora's Box - Original Sin

No, don't know that one. How does it compare with Bad For Good?

It's like being a cardboard cut-out...

But with incredible female singers as opposed to Mr Steinman's slightly less impressive vocal stylings!

Fleetwood Mac - Rumours. A 45rpm double album that I treated myself to at the Bristol show and was saving until my amp was fixed, but as that looks a long way away I thought I'd have a listen through my AV system and it sounds blooming fabulous. Supposed I better get used to it. The AV that is.

Tangerine Dream, love them :) I think I already mentioned it somewhere, but 'Dream Sequence' is a good one ;)

Good news and good luck with the job, Jim.

I know nothing of Andy Pratt but that's a fairly alluring and definitive title.

First blast of vinyl last night for a few days:

Imperial Bedroom - Elvis Costello & The Attractions

England's Bob's masterpiece?

Sgt.Pepper - The Beatles

The Guitar & Other Machines - Durutti Column

Side Tracks - Bob

America's Declan McManus' off-cuts masterpiece?

Andy Pratt's first two records, 'Records Are Like Life' and 'Andy Pratt' are both quirkily brilliant, melodic and, well, beautiful. The next couple or so are also very good. If you investigate, I'd recommend 'Andy Pratt' which is full of lovely songs. It's on Epic Records.

Yes, I got a call from the old school; could I go in and teach Year 11 Drama for their exam, long-term teacher absence. I'll bet there's no coursework either and you know what a nightmare that is. (Edexcel) 5 periods a fortnight. Oh well, it's money and I've missed teaching Drama.

Yes, Imperial Bedroom is a great record and free of the later over-wordy lyrics. It's one of my favourites but I always go back to 'Trust'.' I think that's a great Elvis record. 'Armed Forces' too. 'King Of America' I love.

While I'm here, so far today:

Quintessenc-In Blissful Company. Great hippy record. Brilliant spacey lead guitar player.

Bill Evans-Explorations. Probably my most played record. Scott Le Faro's bass playing is beyond belief.

Some more later.
