I know you weren't trying to be funny, but it was still funny. I think you have a touch of the Tommy Coopers about you: I see the name and I laugh.

My guesses. Is there a prize for this?

I'd have thought I had more of the Bernard Bresslaws about me, than Tommy Cooper.

All three correct, well done.

Is there a prize? Is there f**k !

Hi Charlie

The whole Neil Young first album original/reissue debate is, as I thought, rather complicated and more involved than I realised. The easy way to tell if your version of 'Here We Are In The Years' is an original is the ending:there should be a heartbeat sound which was removed in the remix/reissue. There is apparently one version of the record which contains one side of the original and one side of the remixed version! I had no idea and I'm going to have to play mine through to find out what I've got. The Steve Hoffman forum is good as is the Nick Drake forum. I still think yours is an original which is now worth serious money as many NY fans, myself included, prefer it so it's highly sought after. If you ever come across the German, '2 Originals Of Neil Young' this has the original mix and it's quite easy to find.

Phew!

Hi Jim,

Great research there. Thanks.

I'm just about to ascertain which version I have. I'll report back accordingly.

I'm an occasional visitor to the Steve Hoffman forums but I haven't ventured to the Nick Drake one. Thanks for the tip off.

Additional note/question:

I wonder which mix made it onto the 2009/2010(?) vinyl reissue of NY's first four LPs. The box set version. Superb sounding Harvest on there too!!

The version on the box set reissue of the 4 albums used the original masters from the Neil Young remix so it's the later version, although I think it sounds better; in fact I think that this is probably the best sounding version of the record, sonically-speaking. I still prefer the original mix though! Those 4 lps from 2010 are certainly the best sounding versions as is Neil Young's Greatest Hits. There's a warmth and better instrument separation. If only he'd maintained the quality control evident on those first four records-I'm thinking 1980's and some of the recent stuff here. Having said that, I'm a big fan of 'Old Ways.' and the live bootlegs of The International Harvesters are really good, although I only have them on tape.

Hi Jim,

Yes, I agree with you about the first four albums in the re-issued box sounding good. Very good. I was also taken aback by the supreme audio sound quality of the Blu-rays in the Archive Vol.1 box. The best argument for digital versions of older recordings I've yet to hear.

Returning to the debut LP: so in theory I might own both mixes? The re-issue and the first incarnation of the original? I haven't had the chance to play the original debut album yet. It's not a gatefold, but as mentioned it's a rather thick and glossy covered item featuring no text on the front at all, just the painting of NY.

The allure and love of vinyl. And that's on a day when I've hardly played any.

Snatched an hour or so this morning:

Oh, What A Lovely War - Joan Littlewood's Theatre workshop cast recording

(Did you ever produce this in your Drama teaching days, Jim? I really like it and I'm tempted by attempting some version of it at our school next year)

Down In the Groove - Bob

Blood On The Tracks - Bob.

Hi Charlie

Yes, I think your sleeve with no name might be an original; however, it could be a remix in an original sleeve that Reprise were using up. Listen to the record and use the clues from Steve Hoffman ie heartbeat ending on 'Here We Are In The Years' is an original.

I saw a production of 'Oh What A Lovely War' at a nearby school and suggested we might have a stab at it but nobody was interested! I think it would be an interesting one to do but a lot of work. 'Bugsy' and 'Cabaret' were my major school production triumphs but I had a great pianist and musical director which really helped. I think that's the issue with school productions: you need a mess of help.

Yes, the allure of vinyl is ever-present and has been for about 45 years. There's nothing like looking through crates of records and finding something you've always wanted or something rare, precious and beautiful. I'll never tire of it and I'll never sell them either even if I'm short of money: there's too much of my life invested in them. CD's? It's just not the same is it?! Horrible little things that you can't watch going round and round!

Hope you work out which Neil first album records you've got; I played my copies today and I still think it's a great album.

Easily their best, and a very underrated album.

It's the only Psychedelic Furs album I've got, BBB. If I come across any others I will probably take a punt on them. I really like this record especially 'Sister Europe.' Interesting band. Thanks for your comment.

They're all worth getting, apart from Midnight To Midnight, which is awful. Mirror Moves is a bit polished, but has some good tracks, World Outside is a little bit Madchester, but still good, and Book Of Days was quite a return to form after the dreadful Midnight To Midnight. I'd recommend Talk Talk Talk and Forever Now as the best albums after the debut though.

Tomorrow's Harvest - Boards Of Canada. Borrowed from my son and a first ever listen to BoC. I don't understand why it sounds more worn out than any LP of mine; now I know what surface noise is, but I suspect it's artificial.

Hi Jim,

I eventually got around to playing both of my Neil debut albums. And yes, it seems I have both versions. The box set is obviously the remix and the other is the original. The heartbeat effect/sound is present. And the sound overall is very muted and boxed in, but as we've noted, it carries it's own charm and sensibility.

Other plays today after NY

Dylan - Dylan

More Bob Dylan Greatest Hits

Round & Round - New Order 12"

Get The Message - Electronic 12"

Bread & Circuses - The Durutti Column

Hi Charlie

Well done! I thought you'd got both versions. I think the original 'What Did You Do To My Life' trounces the remix by the way.

By the way, on the subject of Neil, have you got a vinyl copy of the 'Eldorado' mini Lp? Good stuff, although some of it ended up on 'Freedom' of course. Nice to have though.

Finally braved the howling winds on my bike and bought a load of records today so I'm listening to a few tonight. I'm just glad to be home in one piece to be honest!

John Mayall- John Mayall's Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton (mono)

The Smiths-On The Road. Double LP live boot on coloured vinyl. Very decent sound and the band on great form.

The Red Garland Trio-Groovy

Leo Kottke-Live In Europe

Ruffhouse Records Greatest Hits-Fugees, Cypress Hill, Wyclef Jean et al.

Hi Jim,

That's an interesting haul you purchased on your travels. Of particular interest is The Smiths boot. Which year/tour is it? Also, I imagine the mono version of Bluesbreakers sounds good.

No, I haven't a vinyl copy of Eldorado, just the CD. It's a cracking EP. Have you got the vinyl version??

My listening this evening:

Circuses & Bread - DC. (Again. It's so good. Think I've got the title the right way around this time!)

Bona Drag - Moz (Bits of both the original ans the 2010 remaster/re-issue/recreation)

Hi Charlie

The Mayall with EC in mono is somehow more organic, like a band playing but probably it sounds a little less sophisticated than the original blue stereo. I don't think Eric has ever played with such ferocity: his solos are so damn fierce. Great record.

Yes, I bought Eldorado on the day it was released; I just called in at a record shop and there it was-mine is from New Zealand or Australia, I think. Probably worth a few quid now. Hopefully! Not that I'd ever flog it.

The Smiths record can be had on ebay and I recommend it. Boot quality, maybe 7/8 out of 10. Not soundboard, but not that far off. It's very listenable and clear and they are on great form. Its from Los Angeles, 26/08/86. Actually, it's far more engaging and inspired than 'Rank.' Only my opinion of course. Moz sings brilliantly. Very consistent sound quality, no wavering in and out of focus. Good instrumental balance with the voice. Nothing overpowering anything else. Really enjoyable.

Any Durutti Column is fine by me. Ditto Moz solo.

Hi Jim,

Thanks for the reviews. I haven't played my (stereo) copy of Bluesbreakers in a long time, I'll hunt it out. I'm inclined towards a Smiths live boot, Rank just doesn't quite cut it. I used to have a stack of Dylan, NY, Smiths, Brian Wilson boots/gigs on tape but they got "lost" in a house move years ago. I don't think I've bought one for over a decade. The internet supplied all those needs.

I'm going to a record fair today, and will hopefully come across some interesting items. Bob,NY, Zappa and countless others are on my "list". Which usually means I come back with a stack of solo Bryan Ferry LPs and a Dub Syndicate 12".

I'm rather green-eyed about your vinyl copy of Eldorado, I have to say. It's a real tour de force. Yes, I imagine it's worth a fair bit. Always nice to know, even though, as you say, you'll never sell. Quite right too.

I laughed at this: it's a familiar story, but that's the joy of it all, Charlie. Hope you find something that you've always wanted.

i couldn't agree more. I very rarely leave a record store or fair with what I had in mind when I walked in! Case in point is what I bought yesterday at my local second hand record shop and am listening to at the moment.

Al Stewart - Year Of The Cat

I was browsing through, saw it, remembered several people referencing it on here and just bought it on a whim, only knowing the title track from radio play. It's great and it turns out I do know other tracks.
