I have just realised both Shadders and IMark saw the word USB Cable and then an opinion and instantly simultaneously turned into Keyboard warriors and the Zorro of the hifi community - going into action to save the unsuspecting il informed hifi enthusiast money - wahey - I can see that becoming its own tv show.

What they clearly missed is that Gazzip asked me for my opinion on the jcat isolator and I started by saying I have only had short period of time with it because I was waiting for the jcat usb cable to arrive to use the isolator with.

Following that all my opinions were aimed at the isolator - well I suppose the combo really but I was thiking of the isolator more as that is what Gazzip asked me about. So wind necks in boys, stand down, at ease - save the battle for another day

My comments on expectation bias etc., were solely for a non galvanic isolating USB cable, where jcat are asking people to pay €349. I stated that for the USB isolator that this will probably be commensurate with stated improvements in the hifi press in terms of reduced noise and jitter.

I have not disagreed with the USB isolator potential capability as I have commented, but I have disagreed with the USB cable. I have mentioned both in my post.

You have stated jcat USB isolator and jcat USB cable.

As such, my response is relevant and is based on your statements. Hence, your response is not warranted.

Yes, I did read that, but I assume people posting on here have the common sense to know that €349 for a cable, especially a short one, may be taking the pee a bit.

I am unable to determine whether people understand the scientific fact that their own brain is fooling them, or whether they are consciously stating "I know I am not hearing differences, but I want to, and, I so much want to spend £xxx on a cable, because I have so much more money than sense".

I could understand it if these people are exceedingly affluent, where money is no object.

What is also an anathema, is that rather than thank people for trying to stop them making a mistake, they respond with a rude attitude, yet, if one were to try and sell them this type of product, for an exorbitant amount, they would be thanking you.

Gazzip asked about the isolator after testing it i suggested he buy it. Thats pretty clear. After your testing of it what do you think??

The cable from the isolator is the important one because the isolator regenerates the usb signal so therefore from there to the dac is the important link.
So if he has a good usb cable use it after the isolator pretty simple advice. If he doesnt what difference does it make - obviously enough for you two to want to argue over 10 posts each. You 2 must have been bored this evening

The jcat USB cable, which does not provide galvanic isolation, is just a cable, and it is not worth €349.

The Isolator, which has a fair amount design and investment, does seem to be better value, but without detailed analysis, I would not be able to state that it is worth €365.

Comparing the two, and knowing that a USB cable is just that, a cable with connectors, I would not expect to pay more than £20 for a good quality cable.

What you seem to be stating and inferring is :

1. You do not believe that with regards to cables, that your brain is fooling you as proved by science, but you are happy to use said equipment which could only have been designed and built due to science.

2. You complain about people disagreeing with you on a public forum and only want response from people who agree with you.

You are willing to believe marketing statements with regards to cables, yet want to ignore science which is to the contrary.

You may recall the "torso in the Thames" news report, where a child from Africa had been brought to the UK and their arms, head and legs had been chopped off, and the torso dumped into the Thames. Chemical analysis of the gut showed that they have specific ingredients such as a gold isotope that could only have come from a specific region of Africa and is used in magic rituals. These people who had perpetrated this act believe in magic, yet use mobile phones, get on aircraft, trains and cars for travel, watch TV and probably use the telephone and Internet. Essentially all provided by science.

Would you defend these peoples right to believe in magic?

Believing that cables can change the sound for the better as described by marketing people when transporting digital signals is akin to believing in magic, when science proves it does not.

Ignoring the science that proves your brain is fooling you is the same as wanting to believe in magic.

Hifi people can be obsessive when trying to obtain better sound. Maybe you have the money to waste, but others may not have such resources, and they may be stretching their finances.

So, you must allow for the alternative scientific based comments to challenge your magical beliefs.

Your whole belief system would shatter if you would admit that you've flushed thousands and thousands of pounds through the drain by buying snake oil remedies that don't and can't work. Of course you will say that the expenive snake oil works. But just because you say so doesn't make it true. If you don't perform double blind tests, your statements about testing equipment are completely meaningless.

However in this specific situation Gazzip who has demonstrated a obvious level of sanity and high intelligence - he has openly said he owns his own business which has afforded him a nice life style - a nice home and ownership of some serious hifi equipment. he is a very credible

A man of this level of intelligence is more than capable of making up his own damn mind.

You havent heard my system - you cannot comment on its performance, its all that matters nothing else, its nothing to do with believing in anything its just how the system performs every day. You would not think I have wasted money if you had heard it I am confident of that- so the rest of your comments is just noise to me - pointless

In my original post, I did not state you were wrong. I provided an alternative statement.

As others have said, this is a public forum, and if you want a personal conversation, then use email.

In another thread, you congratulated someone buying a cable which reinforced your approach - I think you said "good man" to the purchaser. As such, you only want people to respond who have the same view as you.

Whether someone has their own business or not, is no proof of sanity. Society is littered with examples of people, who are successful, having more money than sense. In fact this phrase came about due to so many people having more money than sense.

No one is challenging your right what to believe, but on an open forum, the belief will be challenged.

As per previous thread interaction, why don't you start your own forum where people can only adhere to your rule set.

You are correct in that no one has asked for my opinion, nor has anyone thanked me for my posts when I disagree that cables make a difference. Therefore, what is your suggestion with regards to myself and this forum? Should I only post when someone asks me to? Should I only post when my view is commensurate with the person I am responding to? Under what conditions can I post?

You need to get out and listen more from the comment - as after hearing about a £250k system a couple of months ago at a hifi show - there was nothing dimishing about that except my soul at how much better it sounded than my system at home. Simple as that really.

In my original post on this thread I made a statement on both the isolator and the USB cable. You have mentioned both in your posts on this thread.

You seem to be stating we can all state what we want, and then complaining when people do state what they want.

This may help - people on this forum have experience and/or an engineering background. They approach the hobby with a critical and structured thought process. Every technological advance has been made due to science, using a critical and structured thought process. So people will apply this regimen to posts on this forum.

No one on this forum has complained or stated you cannot post what you want on this forum. Perhaps you should do the same for others.

No, it's not that simple at all. You probably thought that expensive system sounded great because of expectation bias. You knew it was a very expensive system, so your brain told you it had to sound incredible. Your comments would make a bit of sense if there had been different systems with different price tags and you hadn't known which system was playing. But you don't seem to believe in double blind testing. I imagine because deep down inside you don't want to find out that you've been conned by marketing babble for all these years.

You fall for the same expectation bias that is rife in the wine world. People have been tricked into believing that they were drinking a very expensive wine because it was served from an expensive looking bottle. They even commented about the depth of flavour etc while they were tasting the exact cheap wine they had tasted earlier. Only because it was served in a more expensive looking bottle.

And the law of diminishing returns does exist. Obviously better components will most likely lead to more lifelike reprodution, which is what good HiFi should be about. Just like it should be about neutral sounding.
