This is an artist I need to give a listen to, a contender for the blog.

Definitely Mac. They are rapidly becoming my favourite current/still working band (along with The Decemberists), ands not just because they hail from the kingdom of Mancunia!
If you get a chance go see them live, or their main man John Bramwell solo. I went to see him earlier this year and what a fantastic 2 hours it was, full of jokes, witty banter, audience interaction, and most importantly great songs. With this in mind I thoroughly recommend his solo live CD "Live At The Trades".
.
The Decemberists are also very good live.saw them at the Glasgow o2 academy last year and was the best gig I've been to in ages. The most diverse band I know of...every album is different from alt folk to prog rock to country....they can do it all...my fave band.

I can see the attraction to The Decemberists, as they are very diverse and obviously highly talented musicians, but I do struggle with their heavier material and probably wouldn't buy an album.
