I have recently picked up a leak 20 valve amp with point one pre amp and a leak trough line 2 for a bargain price of £5 at a car boot sale unfortunately it didnt have any speakers with it,so I was wondering if anyone knows what sort of speakers are best compatible with the system? Are vintage better as opposed to modern? thanks

Get the kit completely checked over by a qualified service technician before you even turn this stuff on. (Unless of course you are qualified.)

Good chance that there are at least a few very elderly components (capacitors especially) that may need replacing.

Moreso given you don't know the provenance.

Read chebby's last sentence again...provenance, you have no idea!

These typically go for anywhere between £500 and upwards. I've seen some models that've had the works of a service and NOS valve changes go as high as £1500.

A fiver - good on you! The tuner's not bad either - where's this carboot sale at then...?!

EDIT: GT Audio's website is worth a look - they specialise in Leak servicing and their Troughline endeavours are wonders to behold apparently. (Graham Tricker Audio). Website link: http://www.gtaudio.com/serv_rep.html

Another Edit: Check out the Classique Sounds site too - they do Stereo 20 rebuilds from £199.

I am lucky enough to have it in an almost mint condition i have turned the unit on and its running fine i bought it from an old couple who had stored it well padded in boxes in their loft for the past 20 or so years it may need some attention after being idle for so long but by the look of it not a lot all i need is some speakers and i will have a great looking vintage system thanks for your help

Apparently some Proac's are sensitive enough to work with low wattage valves
