Football is looking good. If I'm nitpicking, there's a hint of extra brightness at the right fringe of the screen during fast pans. To be clear, this is nothing like the stripes I saw on the GT50. If this is as bad as things get, I'm happy.

50 Hz motion is much improved. There's very mild doubling imaging (e.g. halfway line) during fast pans, but it's very hard to spot. I mention this only to be thorough. I'm most impressed by how stable and detailed the image remains during medium and fast pans (this is a notable improvement over last year's sets).

My only other gripe is that there's a mild green tint to images, but calibration will sort that out.

I hope this doesn't sound like over-enthusiasm or hyperbole. As I'm sure you know, if something really bothered me you'd be hearing about it. Of course the TV isn't perfect, but it's the best I've seen (admittedly it's a while since I watched a ninth gen Kuro, and I've never seen a KRP in action).

I have seen the line down the left or right of the screen on the Sony LED TVs. Did not know it was an issue for plasmas. Those lines are pretty much there all the time though, if you look out for them on the Sony 923 range you see them come and go, very annoying!

It's an inherent plasma TV issue (CRT TVs suffered from line bleed too). Your GT50 will display some line bleed.

I could highlight content that shows it up, but it's best not to go looking for problems (says the man that spent the afternoon looking at grey slides to test for screen uniformity issues).

As always, it comes down to which issues you can live with.

Any problems I've spotted on the VT65 are so minor that I can't reasonably complain. After all the irritation and disappointment of the last four months, I'll grab that with both hands and be thankful.

Thanks Gel. That whole episode completely escaped my attention.

Tales of other manufacturers selling faulty goods and doing little about it gives me some perspective on my recent (and not so recent) TV woes.

I suppose the problem I had on my first GT50 could be classed as line bleed. At the time most people were putting it down to image retention from the Sky Sports News channel, but it was not there on my second or third one and have avoided that channel a lot of the time since. You could only see it on the football and was only a problem I noticed after a while, and I had already arranged for the next one due to buzzing.

I think you should rejoice that you have a TV you're happy with. I'm sure you'll spot some line bleed if you go looking for it, but it'll only annoy you once you're aware of it.

You lucked out with your third GT50 in getting a set without the vertical banding issue (DSE) and other notable problems. Problem free GT50s are like gold dust, so hang on to it and, most importantly, enjoy it!

Right, I'm off to choose a suitable Blu-ray demo disc...

Brilliantly, thanks Ben.

It's a stunning TV. The more I watch, the more impressed I become. There's a punch and dimensionality to images I haven't seen before. Any complaint would be beyond even my level of pedantism. While this was an expensive solution, I don't regret the purchase at all and I can happily live with this TV for the next five years.

I can only imagine what professional calibration will add. It'd be criminal not to get the very best out of it. I guess that makes this a happy ending to a tedious, sorry story.

Sorry to hijack!

Had my 50" GT50 for 7 months now.....

I have had no issues with IR, DSE, Banding or buzzing whatsoever - IMHO this set is superb with BD playback and simply stunning with the HD channels on my TIVO Box.

However just had a the PSU fail, so its been replaced (psu) under warranty, while it was being repaired (4 days) I borrowed my dads spare 32" Sony LCD effort - after watching that it makes you realise what a superb set the GT50 is.

I guess I am one of the lucky ones - no issues and I still have 5yrs 4mths left on the warranty so am not worried long term!

I'm afraid you're on your own with the ST60 reviews mate. My advice, wait for prices to drop and go VT65. You won't regret it.

With regard to calibration, I haven't decided yet. I've been in touch with a calibrator on AVF's list that will do 2D (day and night) and 3D calibration for £200. (It helps that he lives nearby and isn't charging for transport.) That'd certainly be the easier option. Alternatively, if I buy a colorimeter I can keep an eye on my TV's accuracy over time (and calibrate others, too).

Congrats Strapped. Hope it continues to put a smile on your face for years to come. I ended up exchanging my GT50 for VT50..It arrives on Tuesday. Going for the newer model was just to costly for me right now. I do have a 90 day cooling of period, so if the VT50 ends up being like the GT50 ,.. Ill exchange for the set you have. But i do hope the VT50 works out for me.

No idea as to why so many folk HAVE issues with their TV's though..... seems the Pana's have many a problem. Not saying that some folk may indeed be having similar problems with other makes of TV.... just so glad that my own Sammy is free from all problems thus far and hope that this continues until I have saved enough for my next new TV in about six or seven years (fingers crossed)

You couldn't have done any better for one to settle on.

I suspect it may not been over taken for quite a while, certainly not near the money you paid for it. The price may drop in the next year but when it is out of stock, it should hold quite a good value.

You can't once the image has been burned into the screen. Best avoid all the swear words.

I haven't got a clue. I might auction the pen on Ebay. I don't think I'd ever use it.

After all the messing around over the last four months, I've now got five pairs of active 3D specs. I might put a couple of pairs up for auction as well.

I'm extremely happy with my system now. It does everything I want to a standard I'm delighted with. The only weak link is the subwoofer; but since I can't use a sub without seriously upsetting neighbours, there's no point in looking for an alternative right now.

In fact, I might auction the subwoofer, too. It's no more than a wooden box that takes up space and is never switched on. The combined take would lessen some of the pain from recent expenditure.

Hope you get to see the new sets in action soon. I'll be interested to hear what you think.
