Just a pure novice in Home Cinema equipment, in this day and age period is it necessary to have the facilities of THX system on a receiver, or do they operate normal without it ?
At present I own and use a multi channel AV Receiver ie:- Sony STR-DA1200ES and I am the process
of purchasing another receiver which has more HDMI connections, and more suitable for HD transmissions.
Hope somebody can answer the above question, thanking you kindly.

THX certification is no more than a quality standard, which manufacturers can choose to submit their products for. It also allows the use of some THX bolt-ons for surround, such as re-equalisation and THX Cinema EX/Neural Surround processing.

But no, you don't need THX on a receiver for it to function perfectly well.

Andrew, what's your professional, considered opinion of the THX processing modes, worth bothering with or not?

I used THX Cinema EX on the Onkyo when watching movies, but mainly because it's there.

I really wouldn't advocate upgrading in order to get it, or indeed buying one receiver over another because it has THX certfication.

After all, to carry the process through, you really need a certified player, speakers and, preferably, display.

Does it make that much difference?

No, both of my choices are THX certified, one's Select the other's Ultra2 (I think), just a happy bonus really.

All in good time dear chap!

Not so's I've noticed, no. But then the £7000+ speaker system I'm using isn't THX-certified
