Thinking about speaker terminals

Over the weekend the cat decided to recycle its dinner right behind the right hand speaker. I moved it out to clear up and the speaker began cutting out slightly. After wiggling the cable around found the bare ends were shorting out intermittently.

How much would it cost for someone to terminate the cable at the amp end only?

Don't know exactly PP, but can't imagine it being that much... I used to have some inexpensive gold plated screw on banana plugs bought from Richer Sounds.

Pussy suffering from the heat too?

Any self respecting dealer (especially one you have been a customer with) should be able to solder on a set of banana plugs for an agreed fee. (Usually a tenner* with my lot, or free if I am buying something else at the the same time.)

Don't faff with gold plated exotica. The nickel plated plugs with black and red plastic screw on covers are fine. (Unless you live in a salt mine, gold is ridiculous 'overkill' anyway.)

A good solder job will ensure you never have to go back and trim off oxidised copper.

*A few months ago I bought a lovely pair of JPW Sonatas that had a dead tweeter. I bought a pair of MNIB replacement Audax tweeters and my dealer soldered their connections and fitted them for £10.

For a tenner you cuuld get a soldering iron and do the job yourself :)

T

The average ten quid soldering iron won't get the plugs hot enough for a proper solder joint and you'll end up with a "dry joint". If you heat the plugs too much they'll oxidize or tarnish. That's why a lot of dealers use crimped plugs.

Eek! I've taken the SilverScreen off and connected up my old Carnival Silver Plus. Fingernails down a blackboard. Honestly didn't realise it was that shrill. :boohoo:

When you first got the cable you said it was only a subtle difference.

Have you got the cables pointing the right way for the electrons to flow more easily into the speakers? (If you raise the amp above the speakers this improves.)

Have you burnt them in yet? (You haven't used them since 2010 but at least the heat wave should speed up the process.)

You could try demagnetising them.

Or drive them to Wiltshire and bury them, for one lunar cycle, near the centre of the Avebury stone circles. (Roughly speaking, under a tree 10 metres to the east of the house opposite the Tourist Information centre.) Stonehenge might be better - closer to where they were made - but Avebury is mellower.

I tried that.............but it only works if on an Equinox. People have tried on the Summer Solstice, but they haven't a clue.

Yes, connected properly. haven't heard the Carnival for ages, and the last time was way before I purchased the Naim and, possibly, the Leema. It sounds really echoey and nasty.

No. Just double checked and it's now been rectified. Sounds better but still doesn't 'right'.

Just got back from dropping the cables off. Little one demanded she came. When we got there she saw a pair of Kef Blades and she ooo'd at their size. She asked how much. When I said around 20k she almost fainted.

Any'sway, picking up Monday as we're off out today.
