Get on it Expat Mike!

It's not a film to watch in halves. It's also not a film that offers up easy answers on a single viewing.

It's taking long enough for everyone to watch it once, so please don't encourage them to watch it more than that. :)

I haven't managed to watch part two today, so can we have a few more days grace please?

I still haven't got round to watching it yet, so don't worry Mike. :shifty:

Work commitments have eased off, albeit very temporarily.

In other words, I have a short window during which I can contribute more than scrappy comments to film club discussion.

Since several members are yet to watch Mulholland Drive, however, this window may pass before we get to say anything.

On another subject, did anyone see the Mark Gatiss documentary last night? I really enjoyed it, though I think it was a repeat. I'm now itching to watch Eyes Without a Face again. It's extremely hard to get hold of a copy with English subtitles. Even the DVD is extortionately priced.

I recorded the documentary, thanks for the recommendation. I will post when I get a chance to watch it.

I havent watched MD yet, not had time for a film in a while but will try to sort at some stage this week.

I'm not entirely sure where we're at. I think as follows:

Expat Mike has watched at least half of the film. You've seen it before, I think. Hi-Fi Outlaw has watched Mulholland Drive. I've seen the film many times.

BBB needs to get himself in the right mood to engage with the weird (and arguably wonderful) word of Lynch; and JD's AWOL.

That's just about spot on, though I'm hoping to find time tomorrow.

I sold 3 sets of speakers and a turntable on eBay on Sunday, so I've been busy either posting them off, or arranging for collection by their new owners for the last few days, and of course I had to watch Liverpool FC batter the poorer half of Merseyside last night too.

Another week has passed and I'll shortly be mired in work again.

Will I be forced to bow out of film club without discussing my one and only nomination?

I hope not Strapped. I still haven't seen MD, but I'll make a big effort this weekend.

In case anyone missed them...

1. At which points in the film do we make the transition from conscious to unconscious representation (or vice-versa)?

2. What does the colour blue represent?

3. What can we learn from the audition scenes (compare and contrast in terms of acting style)?

4. Who is the man behind Winkies (and can we identify his equivalent in other Lynch films)?

If we get through deciphering the narrative in detail, we can perhaps get into what the film says about Hollywood and is in conversation with American film history.

Well I have managed to watch the other half of MD, and I think I could have a bash at questions 2 & 4 only.

Hopefully BBB will get the chance to watch it soon - I presume that he is too depressed to watch it today, after the Liverpool game  :wall:

Still 7 points ahead of the Mancs, I'm absolutely fine.

Wife has gone to bed super early, so I've just stuck the dvd on.

Will let you know how I got on tomorrow evening..

If you can't answer question one, it's impossible to answer question two, Mike!

I need to clarify something with regard to the above question, since there are several audition scenes in Mulholland Drive, including one featuring Melissa George, to which this question does not refer.

Naomi Watts performs the same scene twice in the film, once while rehearsing, with Camilla reading opposite her, and again when she auditions opposite Chad Everett.

Watts' performance is very different in these two scenes. What can we learn from comparing the two; and what in particular is happening during the second scene?

for various reasons my free time disappeared.

Breaking Bad?

 Mildly ill baby plus teething, so little sleep, working out of town incl London, no early finishes, work in evening and weekend and yesterday was baby football, Chinese New Year celebrations and baby swimming! Have squeezed in the odd ep of BB at the end of a day but wouldn't want to watch MD in stupefied 40 min chunks.

He also goes to dancing (ok, ballet ;) ) and swimming. I'm not hoping or expecting that he becomes world class at any of those activities, just giving him a chance to get more confident at each of those things, which he already enjoys, and do them around other children. I'm sure, however, there are some who go to little kickers who really are already hoping their kids will become professional footballers. Fwiw he's pretty good at kicking the ball, despite being the youngest there, but we're just enjoying seeing his enthusiasm and unabashed joy running around. That and he looks really cute in a football kit!

All of which is good. The fact that he enjoys himself and gets to interact with other kids is more than enough reason to encourage such activity.

I'd assumed you weren't banking on him becoming one of Manchester City's starting eleven as an early retirement plan, though one or two parents taking their kids along have probably entertained such thoughts.

Well, I definitely watched the start of MD last night, and I definitely watched the end, but I really can't be sure of how much of the middle I watched. :?

I'll have another go tonight, and hopefully I won't fall asleep this time.
