The £2k Amplifier question.

A mate has asked me to help him source the best Integrated amp he can get within the budget of two grand .

he has a Gyro se, moon CD player and kef reference speakers.

an integral phono stage of good quality is a must.

what would be good amps to try out, either new or 2nd hand.?

Good shout but doesn't have a built in phono stage.

snip:

When I decided it was time to spin some black plastic on my Pro-ject Xpression through the M6si’s phono stage, that’s when things got interesting. The phono stage is switchable between MM and MC, just in case you were wondering.

I am good lad and had read that the new amp is equipped with a very accurate RIAA, within ± 0.5dB from 20 Hz to 20 kHz. I was also aware that it maintains its accuracy right up to 50 kHz.

That might mean a great deal to some of you and you should probably be suitably impressed

The new "Si" version is a different model to the one you linked to (which I believe doesn't have a phono stage).

eek .... sorry ... I see that some guys use a musical fidelity V-LPSII connected to the M6i for the phono

It's still a great choice provided a separate phono stage isn't out of the question.

hey, OP

This Accuphase looks like a really good deal - and, well basically, most of the 2nd hand suggestions everyone posted so far. If you can return these (in case your friend won't like them), and they have warranty, such a purchase should be safe, and they should sound really awesome. On the website from this bay add there's more stuff that might peak your interest, like the Kenwood L-A1, which seems to be in the ballpark (@2600 euro).

If you want new, most amps near that price mark won't have an integrated phono stage. The Creek Destiny 2 is a sound suggestion, to which you could add Rega Elicit-R (both of these have phono stages).

Also, if a separate phono stage is an option, you could look at one of these (cheap to expensive): Graham Slee Gram Amp 2 SE, Musical Surroundings Phonomena II (this one seems to be somewhat of a bargain), Clearaudio Basic + or a Sutherland PH3D phono stages. As for a NEW amp to go with the respective phonostage, I auditioned most of these with a Simaudio Moon CDP or DAC and they sounded great together: Simaudio Moon Neo 250i (which is the obvious partner), Naim Nait XS2, Sugden A21SE and Jadis Orchestra (tube amp, sounds fantastic). Also, Primare I32 might be worth checking.

goodluck

dim_span, good spot on that Aragon 24k pre-power. I'd be tempted to have a punt on that myself if I wasn't already amplifiered up.

Having had my leema amp a while now, I did mention to my mate that the leema amps are very good, and well respected.

I found a leema Tucana II for £1899 which I think is a bargain.

It will probably take something of that quality to do justice to the Kef Refs.
