Not so odd given that Woolworths used to be a major retail player (and wholesaler/distributor) of LPs, singles, cassettes and CDs (even sheet music) back in the day.

I bought my first LP from Woolworths.

I was going to say something about jumping on the bandwagon but then thought better of it.

Just surprised supermarkets haven't started selling records as they seem to sell everything else. Not really sure how I feel about this and what sort of effect it would have on prices.

Well it's unlikely to push them up. I'd have thought a bigger issue might have been if they start hoovering up the limited output from the pressing plants the smaller retailer might struggle for stock. But as the supermarkets are only likely to stock chart stuff ot shouldn't affect me too much!

I believe the smaller independent retailer is already struggling to match / complete with the likes of Amazon and HMV. I would love to buy from my !ocal independent shop but there prices are usually 25% more than Amazon, HMV or eBay / internet retailers. Having competition from Supermarkets would not help there situation. I agree that Supermarkets would probably only sell chart records so I would probably wouldn't use them.

Personally I applaud the move, I don't have any independent retailers anywhere near me, so being choosy is out the question. But equally it's unlikely my nearest Tesco will suddenly start selling records any time soon. For the past five years, you haven't even been able to buy a CD or DVD anywhere in my local town centre since WH Smith stopped selling them, let alone a record.

Independent record stores will generally be more expensive - it is all they sell, so they have to make their profit from it. Most of our prices are cheaper than HMV or Amazon, but we're lucky in that our profit comes from elsewhere, so we don't have to make much on record sales.

to go back to how it was in the mid 80's with lots of different places selling music in all formats.

I used to buy my records from Boots in Barnsley. A pharmacy!

Anything that gets music to the masses has got to be good.

My parents come from Barnsley and visiting my grandparents back in the early 80,s I bought Madness baggy trousers from Boots in Barnsley and playing it first on my uncles 1950's record player. The look on his face while playing it was so funny he really didn't like the song.

Not sure our local Boots sold records, but certainly WH Smiths did. Then it was records and CDs, then CDs and videos with no records, then CDs and DVDs, then neither. Which is bizarre really, because while downloading MP3s is big business and I can understand why CDs disappeared from their shelves, I didn't think film downloads were even nearly as big. Presumably people are instead watching them on Sky/Netflix/Prime/iTunes and illegal torrents...

I moved to England at the end of 1985 and remember buying Hits 4 from Boots in Scarborough for the princely sum of £4.99. There were loads of music shops in Scarborough back then. I think there is one now. If you include hmv.

does anyone know which Tesco stores will stock vinyl? Don't seem to be able to find a list....

Where is HMV in Scarborough? I don't recall seeing one when I was there a few months ago. There's the little independent store up by the theatre don't forget :)

If I remember correctly, it was on the corner of Aberdeen Walk, and yes, it has closed now.... Record Revivals has been there forever... It used to be across the road....had some good records from there.

Still not found a list of the 40 mythical Tesco stores....
