REJOYCE!

Time to play the first ECM CD I bought, Keith Jarrett - Dark Intervals.

Also on Spotify! Excellent news, you just made my day!
Also available on Tidal.

Welcome back Vladimir!

Thanks!

I think I'll have a full ECM jazz and classical week. *music2*

Me too! I'm adding their latest releases to my albums on Spotify. And there are tons of albums I've never listened to :)

Reading too much Voltaire and Rousseau can have that effect.

I'm glad the protagonist is still alive and well with us. We are not our jobs or social roles. We are not what others expect us to be.

Life is suffering, it's a given, which is why we need beauty (aesthetics) to persist. Music reduces suffering, craving things increase it.

And audiophile cables are for suckers.

ba ba ba ba ba Bach!

J.S. Bach: Six Sonatas For Violin And Piano - Keith jarrett & Michelle Makarski

MI0003595292.jpg

"Jazz pianist Keith Jarrett has recorded Bach before, on both piano and harpsichord. His interpretations are not jazz versions of Bach but are played straight. In this case you might say relatively straight, for Bach's sonatas for violin and keyboard, BWV 1014-1019, were written for a harpsichord and are generally played that way; somehow the ear is jarred more by the piano here than in Bach's solo keyboard music (which Jarrett has also recorded). Jarrett fans will find the evidence of his characteristic style not in rhythmic inflections toward jazz but in his way of sustaining notes, which is never excessive. As long as you agree to this rather unorthodox way of performing Bach, which 50 years ago would not have been unorthodox, you will enjoy this release."

"The usual ECM bonus and minus, namely excellent sound and lack of any booklet material other than bad art photography, are both present, and on balance this is an unorthodox but effective Bach chamber-music release." *shok* How dare they! *biggrin*

The weather is truly in Twin Peaks form today. So I thought I might try some polish composers, as it's been suggested by lpv.

Dawn Upshaw soprano, with David Zinman at the helm of London Sinfonietta.

This became very popular here about 15 years ago, in the radio station Classic FM’s chart. Not sure what prompted it, but this version was favoured by many. Dawn Upshaw has a beautiful voice. I have a rawer sounding version with Polish forces.

Worth a listen, especially for anyone less inclined towards ‘classical’ music.

Miserere by Górecki is also excellent. If you're in the mood.

Today's recommendation is this fine album and composer I discovered just a few days ago:

Manuel Blasco de Nebra (1750-1784) - Piano Sonatas.

I can't recommend this disc too highly. The Pavel Haas Quartet have produced a series of outstanding chamber music recordings and for me this is the best of the lot, a revelation. Interpretation and engineering are both top notch.

Excellent recommendation, what a brilliant quartet.
I was in Prague last August and I bought 20+ CDs at the Supraphon shop. Very underrated label.

@Vlad: you're welcome :)

Excellent, thanks. Added to favourites to have a listen tomorrow. Automatically went onto Qobuz but surprisingly it's also available on Tidal.

Starting the morning with the Smetana as recomended. New pieces for me so still feeling my way musically but the the SQ is 'sit up and take notice' excellent. Might take a chunk out of my day, that's a good thing!

*good*

So glad to hear that you are enjoying this wonderful music. They have a joyous way with Smetana and Dvorak, with vibrato kept under control at all times. They have spoken about playing in an almost jazz idiom - emulating the freedom of jazz musicians, and I think that comes across. Their playing really carries you along. They are also quite democratic in arriving at their interpretations, spending time together to talk through their individual ideas.

@Pedro: I'm very envious of your shopping expedition. It's been too long since being in beautiful Praha.

@Vlad: good to see CPE Bach getting a mention here. Still underrated and under represented imho.
