It's taken a whole fortnight and my eye keeps wandering and my mind keeps wondering.....
We're delighted with this new setup. It sounds like a huge leap from what we had before, is easy to use and we can quickly flick from vinyl to the WiiM; we're listening to music more than ever. It fits into the house without gobbling up lots of space and we've got a perfect listening spot. The problem is that it makes me wonder what an attainable best sound quality can be within a modest budget.
I'm conscious that we've probably made the largest audible leap in quality that we can in one go, shifting from streaming through single active Sonos speakers, to properly amplified source material through "proper" speakers. Obviously we can bump the quality of the digital source at some point if Spotify ever pull their finger out and offer lossless (or we can move to Tidal), but the next jumps would inevitably be upgrades.....
I think this system will primarily be about streaming music with the turntable as a secondary source for my wife. I don't think that turntable will need to be upgraded in the next 5+ years. Bookshelf speakers will remain appropriate for the size of the room and the budget is sensible - I wouldn't yet want to spend more than £1,000 on a single item, unless there was sufficient oomph to justify it.
What is the most logical order to think about improving these component parts, hypothetically speaking? I don't fully understand the value that larger separate streaming units give over the WiiM, so my instinct is that it would be the (brand new!) amp or older speakers that would be the first thing to look at, and I'm not sure that passive speaker tech can really have evolved much in rather a long time.
