I have 2 questions, Can you use a subwoofer with a hifi? to make it a 2.1 system? maybe a subwoofer to completement some floor standers so the bass isnt taken away from them?

I have a Rotel RA-10, can i pair a subwoofer with this?

Yes, use the pre-outs on the Rotel then set up the sub at the relevant frequency level. Will take a fair amount of trial and error

Next question...

What subwoofer would you reccommend? Under £500, I mainly want it cause my bose are fine with soft rock etc, but they dont have enough for rap so i want something that plays loud and something big, Basiclly the biggest sub for under £500.

:) sound like a bass head but its just for abit of fun

IMO.

Biggest sub for the money is the BK Monolith.

Best vfm sub for 2 channel is the BK XXLS-400

You're recommended to use the high level (speaker level) outputs on an amp for 2.1 use, to get the sound from the speakers and sub integrated in phase. In HT systems it's less crucial, so pre-outs are used.

I really like the Rel Strata lll, which are about £150ish on ebay secondhand. BK do some good ones I think, but no idea which models as they've not been on my list of things to buy for a while.

Not a bad choice at your price. But manage your expectations. SQ subs do not 'hit' like a car sub - and if they do, you've got a crappy sub.

100% of the music should seem to be coming from the satellites, with integrated bass and no audible boom. If the only way you can tell that the sub is there is by switching it off (thus making the sats sound think) then you are doing it right.

If you think you are going to get a gut-crunching slam from that sub in your living room, you are going to be disappointed.

Dont get the wrong impression, Im not after that syle of bass, just after abit more of a kick. I was after that bass i would have bought a 18" PA subwoofer.

You won't get a 'kick' as such, you'll just get the frequencies you were previuously missing - if there were any. For the majority of music the majority of the time it won't be doing very much at all.

Sorry Dave but I agree with Makka - I have the BK XXLS400 sub which I love - it adds more of a bump than a kick though. I think it will depend on what speakers you have and how you set the sub up - and the room characteristics.

It was exactly what i wanted... Adds more depth to bass and when im gaming and have music on quiet, (usually rap when gaming) I can drop the crossover to 50hz and crank up the bass... Its nice,

Why didnt I do this years ago??
