Hello folks. I have a Pioneer SA-420 from the 1980s, recently serviced, and now I'm on the hunt for good + small bookshelf speakers to match with it. The speakers I have in mind are the System Audio Saxo 5s. The amp lists 21 watts per channel into 8ohms. The speakers have "recommended amplifier power" of 50watts and 4-8 ohms. These are going in a very small room and unlikely to ever be used loud. On paper it looks like the amp isn't powerful enough, but perhaps that's just if you want to achieve much higher volume? Thanks for any advice on this!

Yeah I think you shouldn't replace your amp, for a small room seems nice. The speakers you mention are really good. There are another options I would consider like the KEF Q150 and the Polk S20s.

Not easy one to advise as the OP's amp is fairly low powered. I owned the Pioneer SA-706 for 17 years and that worked well with Wharfedale speakers.
However, in the OP's circumstances/room size I would buy active speakers and use the Pioneer as a preamp.
