I got a 40Z4500 last week from amazon and overall I am impressed with the picture and sound.

I do have one worry though and that is with the remote control. It sometimes appears very unresponsive and seems to freeze in certain menus. This only appears to happen in the 1st hour or so then things seem to get back to normal.

I am finding it a little frustrating as turning the volume up involves holding down the button for some considerable time. admittedly I haven't tried new batteries in the remote, but this has been an issue from day 1 with the batteries that came supplied with the set.

I there a chance I have a faulty remote or TV software or something else?

Cheers

what is IIRC? Infra red remote control?

I really dont want to have to send the whole TV back as that would be a pain

I get this too from time to time...cant quite work out exactly when - but Im convinced its got something to do with the HDMI control...the whole thing just freezes out all RC actions, but if i switch off and then on again, all is well....Its not the batteries - they;re brand new and the lights still work fine on the RC....It's almost as if its searching for something...I do have 2 devices hooked up by HDMI and its alos plugged into my Ethernet network.....I was goign to send it back (bought online) but cant quite face the hassle to be honest - its infrequent but very annoying for sure...

Now that there's another person reporting the same thing, I don;t think its a problem with my set - but do let me know if you get any joy out of Sony - I emailed them 3 weeks ago and they haven't even replied.....

Its not Sony you need to contact. You need to make contact with your local authorised repair agent, either through the original dealer (if its somebody helpful who has a proper relationship with the repairer) or directly. It really won't be much hassle to get it sorted if you go through the right channels.

ÿIÿcontactedÿmy local Sony Centre and they couldn'tÿhelp me, probably miffed that Iÿgotÿit £500 cheaper than they are selling it!

ÿI am going to live with it for a few days, to see if it really is a problem. Then I will probably return it to amazon for a replacement.

ÿIf anyone else comesÿacrossÿthis problem please let me know.

Its not your local Sony Centre you need to contact. A Sony Centre is an independent specialist retailer - effectively a franchise. You need to speak to your local authorised REPAIR agent.

Here is the appropriate link to search for your nearest one:

I think (fingers crossed) that I have solved this.

After much experimentation last night Iÿrealizedÿthat the issue was onlyÿoccurringÿwhen my Sony Blueray player (Sony BDPS350 connected via HDMI) was switched on. So when attempting to watch the blue ray player the volume and other buttons on both the TV remote and the blue ray remote became unresponsive. Theÿproblemÿalsoÿoccurredÿif the blue ray play was switched on and I was watching sky/digital/terrestrial TV.

After much head scratching I started to trawl through the settings within the "Home" ÿmenu of both the Blue Ray and the TV and found a setting in each called "HDMI control", switched both of them to ON, searched for new devices and hey presto, remote seems to now be working OK!

You guys probably already knew all of this and I guess it wasÿprobably was in the instruction manual, but I am never one for reading them :) Will learn next time!

If youÿweren'tÿaware of this I hope this may solve similar issues if anyone comesÿacrossÿthe same problem.

Will let you know if the issue re-occurs.ÿ

I wonder if HDMI control works between different manufacturers - my Bluray is Panasonic, Amp is Pioneer and TV is Sont - will fiddle later!!

Unfortunately this issue hasnt gone away :-(

The only thing I can think of is that the BDPS350 needs a software update as it is considerably older than the 40Z4500.

Its currently running version 07.1.009, how can I find out if this is the mostÿup-toÿdate version? I am going to connect to the internet tonight and see what happens.

The fact that this issue does not occur when watching normal TV makes me think that it is not an issue with the TV at all.ÿ

Much more importantly, what is the picture like?

Have you got Sky? If so, try using the volume control on that (you will have to match your tv model to the remote). I don't use the remote for my Sony screen as my AV remote and Sky does everything I need. And please tell us that you've tried new batteries!??

Itÿisn'tÿthe batteries as the remote works fine when the Blueray player is off.ÿ

I do have sky but why would I want to use the sky remote when watching a Blueray, the sony one should work.ÿ

Response from Sony:

I am pleased to learn you are the owner of a Sony Blu-ray Player and BRAVIA Television.ÿ

To resolve your query please check that the remote controls have a direct line of sight with the sensor on the front of the device and the batteries have not been depleted.ÿ

The firmware update is not related to the remote control functions and is unlikely to improve the connection between the remote controls. If the problem persists please email me the following information:

1. Do you have an issue will all the buttons or just the volume?
2. Does the television remote control work when the Blu-ray Player is turned off?
3. Is the issues intermittent or constant?
4. Has this occurred since you purchased the two devices.ÿ

I hope this information is of some assistance. Thank you for your enquiry.

ÿ

Will let you know the outcome,ÿ

Have you tried resetting your remote control? This seems to have worked for me.

To do this take out the batteries and then press each button for 3 seconds. I catually didnt press each button just the volume, seems to have worked.

I thought the remote control had failed when I first got my Sony set - it took me a few minutes to realise I had left a duster in front of the IR receiver point on the TV!
