Hi,

I have just bought this tv and I am very happy with it,But noticed that your review of it on this webbsite says its a 50hz set, then in the

July edition of What HI-FI Sound and Vision Ultimate Guide to Television the review says its a 100hz set,Which is correct,

Thanks,

redshift50.....

I think those on high mentioned this but they'd normally have sorted it by now

Anyway, the real reason I'm replying is to ask you for a user review on this tv. Any chance you can let us know how it's going ?

Not really had time to do one yet, although the set is a big improvement on the Samsung LE40M87 that I had,

Have not changed any of the settings as yet,but its quite pleasing straight out of the box, will post further details etc once I have had chance to check it out properly.

Hi redshift50,

That was well spotted mate! According to the official Sony website (http://www.sony.co.uk/view/ShowProduct.action?product=KDL-40W4000&site=odw_en_GB&imageType=Main&category=TVP+32-40+Sony+BRAVIA+TV#pageType=TechnicalSpecs), this TV is not 100Hz. (Or at least you have to assume that, by virtue of the absence of the Motionflow 100 Hz feature in the tech. spec.). This is borne out by the same situation in the latest official Sony 2008 product brochure, which I picked up the other day.

For some reason which I am not clear on, Sony are still not including this feature in most of the HD1080 models (with the exception of the X3000 and X3500 top-of-the-range models). However, fortunately this does not appear to matter too much, since as you have probably read in the WHF Ultimate Guide To Televison, the KDL-40W4000 was given one hell of a great review without it. I was always under the impression that you would get superior coverage of fast-action sport when the images are being processed at 100Hz (i.e. reduced motion-blurring, as per Sony's own description in the brochure), but presumably it looks like Sony have achieved this without it - even although they do include it on the higher-spec. HD Ready models such as the D3000. Puzzling!

I too am seriously considering buying the KDL-40W4000, and would be pleased to see your own review (and indeed from other readers who have bought it), particularly regarding how efficient the sports coverage is (football, tennis, golf in particular). Thanks.

That reminded me ... 100hz on the X models up in previous ranges so no different on the 4000 apparently.

The Sony is 50hz - the Ultimate Guide reference was a typo. It's a moot point, though - in side-by-side testing, the Sony outperformed many 100hz sets for motion-handling, ÿproving (yet again) that raw tech-specs are just a tiny part of the equation...

Hi Clare - Can you throw any light on what I was saying earlier about Sony not including Motionflow 100Hz in the spec. of an otherwise fairly high-end HD1080 model? (I understand what you are saying about the KDL-40W4000 outperforming some other 100Hz TV brands). Clearly that is the most important aspect, but it does seem strange when you consider that Motionflow 100Hz is/was present in both the top-spec HD1080 and some HD Ready models, as I mentioned previously. So why exclude it from the new 4000 series? Could it be anything to do with the new 10-bit processing, or is that purely concerned with managing the colour processing and suchlike? Thanks.

Hi,
Thanks to Clare for clearing up the 50/100 Hz query and also to jfsc08579 etc,
I still have not had time to test/review the Sony yet,Sunday is a busy day for me with the Family,
Hopefully I will get chance through the week and set it up to my own personal preferences etc,
Off to watch Top Gear,lol,

Many hours - and possibly sanities - have been lost trying to fathom out Sony's spec choices over the years!

Re Motionflow 100hz being available in HD Ready sets - that actually makes a lot of sense, as those sets are probably going to get used for a lot more standard TV than, say, Blu-ray (where 24fps processing is more important). But either way, Sony's engineers seem to have hit on a good combination of picture-processing on the W4000, however it's being achieved.

New Sony sets in the pipeline. I would love to see a supertest comparing the best of Plasma (Pioneer) vs. the best of LCD (Sony) TVs. Maybe this can shed more light into the endless Plasma vs. LCD debate.

Before I start, please note that this is only a quick review etc,
This Sony is very good LCD,It ouzes style and class,
The default settings are almost useable, not like some makes that come with
brightly lit screens that need sunglasses to repel,
I left it on the Standard Picture settings to make my personal adjustments
to the picture,I lowered the Backlight a tweak and also the Contrast,Also
reduced the Colour a tiny amount,Sharpness down slightly as well,
But upped the Brightness a touch,Other settings were not altered.
There is no point me telling you the settings I used as this was only a
quick setup, will be doing a more in depth one
When I get time.
I used the THX Test/Setup DVD,As you most likely already know the THX Test
is available on some Film Dvd's.
The Sonys Colours are warm and natural, the best I have seen for a long
while.
No sign of motion blur unlike the Samsung I had previously,No problems with
it on SKY-HD,in fact I switched to
BBC-HD to test the Tennis and ended up watching the whole match,Fantastic
picture on it,
The same can be said for Blue-Ray/PS3 and HD-DVD,No complaints at all.
Freeview tuner seems okay also, obviously some channels are worse than
others with some noise on screen as usual etc.The PS3 style menus icons are a joy to use,its so easy to navigate through the menus with the TV picture showing through in the background.

I can definitely recommend this TV,But go and see it in the showroom
first,As I did.Got lots more playing around with it yet....

Good to see that the SONY KDL-40W4000 is getting applause from the UK market. This model is announced here in Germany as available from the end of July, a couple of months later Sony's original date.

My question - yes, I've always got a question! - is have you reviewed or do you intend to review the smaller model from the same stable, the SONY KDL-32W4000? The specs look very much the same, with the exception of the 10bit bit, of course. Will the 32-inch model give the same sort of viewing results as the 40-inch model?

All views welcome. Let me know what you think.

Clare, again, my thanks for your ever so quick response. It would be wonderful to have a copy of the new issue OUT ON THURSDAY! Folks!, but sadly not here in Germany . . .!

I guess I shall have to wait to read the online review, unless someone can repeat the very generous gesture of a week or so ago, when you posted me the Ultimate Guide (well worth the read, if you are wondering).

I look forward to more from your excellent team and will look out for the review. Thanks again.
