My very recently purchased (22/12/2010) 713 has to day been written off by the engineer, it has quite bad backlight bleed and a bright hotspot bottom centre of the screen.

I now have a dilema

1. What should I purchase instead.

2. Chances of a refund.

Any suggestions.

But seriously... sorry to hear that - like our review sample linked to above (OK, that's the EX not NX, but it's one of the 40in '713 series models) - you've had the dreaded backlight bleed strike. Feel free to use that review as evidence that it's potentially a known problem with this particular Sony series at this size.

If you want to save some cash, we've had no problems with several samples of the Sony KDL-40EX503, despite its (on paper) more modest spec.

At a more premium level, the Samsung UE40C8000 is a stunning set which will give you even more futureproofing.

Otherwise, if you've another set to fall back on, i'd maybe take the money and wait for six weeks or so, when the first crop of 2011 sets will start to appear - you'll either be able to pick up a spanking new-generation unit or get a great discount on an outgoing model.

Clare,

I missed the review for some reason, I do have a back up TV a trusty Sony KDL-40W2000 one of the first HD TV's.

The picture is still very good beats the 713 for SD material.

Clare,

Taken the set back and given a full refund.

The manager did say that they have had quite a few Sony TV's returned.
