Update:

So I've had a few days to evaluate the UE40F7000 and I'm rather impressed BUT it does have a rather odd issue. When you enter the bedroom and the TV is on you can very clearly see some extreme torching in two places, bottom centre and bottom right of the screen but once you are in bed watching the TV it simply isn't there at all. It only rears it's ugly head when viewing the TV specifically from the right hand side of the screen off axis which is rather odd so any ideas why that would be the case and is it something I should be concerned by??

Right now I'm undecided if this one is going back or not but as it is fine when in bed and watching the TV I don't know if it's something worthy of returning the TV for another or not? To be quite frank I don't want to go through all that again unless it's necessary and I'm not sure this issue justifies a return or not :?

In all other regards I couldn't be happier with the TV as it offers an excellent picture with all the features I wanted in a bedroom TV and more besides, it's obviously a premium TV and would grace many a living room so to have one in the bedroom is a luxury and brings a smile to my face. It has a similar performance to my main 55F8000 but it doesn't have quite the same black levels or black detail (but it gets pretty close) and does occasionally show some very slight backlight issues but it's so slight that you really have to look for it and is no way as bad as the previous two Panasonic sets I had.

After calibration with my AVS HD 709 disc the picture is exceptional in both 2D and 3D but of course not as accurate with colours as my 55F8000 as that's had a professional THX calibration but in all other areas it offers a really comparable performance to my main set. There are a few features missing from the menus as I expected over the F8000 but on the whole it has only a few minor features missing but it still offeres a complete suite of calibration menus for a complete professional calibration. 3D performance is just as impressive as my 55F8000 and was impressive in detail and impact, strange to have 3D at the bottom of the bed though.

So apart from that strange tourching from one side I'm really happy with this TV and it's miles better than either of the Panasonics I had, it's a proper premium TV that produces a simply superb picture but the question remains...is that issue enough to justify a replacement?

If it affects your normal viewing, then maybe you should. But if it's seen from an angle you're never going to watch the TV from....

I wouldn't say it ever affects my normal viewing and the TV will never be viewed from the angle at which the problem arises so there in lies the question...is it anything I should worry about? My only concern is that it may become an issue in the future but then it's covered by a John Lewis 5 year warranty that doesn't seem to cover this issue therefore if I'm worried about it I should return it now whilst it's in the no quibble returns period no?? :?

I contacted Samsung UK via phone who asked me to take photos of the issue and email them to technical support, I figured this was the best thing to do before contacting John Lewis again. Samsung called me on Thursday after I emailed the pics on Tuesday and after a lengthy discussion in which they tried to treat me like a simpleton and were swiftly put in their place I was finally told that the issue would be deemed "within tolerance" if a Samsung approved engineer came out to look at it as it's not visible from my viewing angle.

Therefore I have claimed back my price match from John Lewis which was paid into my account today and I'm keeping the TV. It still annoys me that at certain angles it's visible but the main thing is that from my viewing position you simply never see it which is the most important thing and that is an end to it although I'm not entirely convinced in all honesty and expected more from a premium TV.

I thought I was very clear what the issue is, no?

All I'm concerned about is if the issue strays into my viewing angle, it could be indicative of an issue I may get in the future which is why I contacted Samsung. Better to get clarification now than to regret not swapping the TV when I had the opportunity.

I certainly hope not or I will be straight on the phone to JL, don't think it will be a problem in all honesty and I'm really enjoying the TV so far

To me what you are seeing is the led lighting which can only be seen when seen off angle, if you could see excessive light bleed during normal content (dark scenes) then that might be cause for concern, but from what you describe this is perfectly normal.

I understand what I am seeing and the cause but I guess I'm more surprised because my main 55F8000 TV doesn't have this issue and there is no torching visible from any angle at all. As you say, excessive light bleed from my viewing angle would be cause for concern but I just thought it wise to check that this was considered normal.

I'm happy with the TV though and it's a lovely bit of kit to have in the bedroom and when in bed watching any content I'm really happy I chose it as it's got seriously impressive picture quality.
