Then maybe you should seriously consider including (Value) as an area of measure in the super test. But that just wouldn't seem right because when buying a product for outright performance, you don't so much take into account the value of that product.

1080p Suspect:Ok. Firstly, don't give me quotes from the magazine because we are talking about ratings, not quotes. Even you said yourself the S370 gets 3 for features and the BD85 gets 4. As for final verdict, both machines score 5. So if both machines score 5 in the picture and sound department, the BD85 by now has the higher rating of the two, right? So i cannot comprehend why the S370 still wins the super test. If its because of pricing, then the S370 isn't really a better performer as such, just a cheaper one. Think about it, the S370 wins overall majority because its good value for money, i understand. But that doesn't necessarily make it the better performer. Also isn't there another machine that beats the S370 or at least equals it according to the facts and figures page?

wow

Mr angry eh? You must be one of those 'anti sony' people
ive heard about

So you dont think "The 'S370 produces the
sharpest, cleanest and most detailed image of all
the players in this supertest" is at all relevant?

As for features, the pan HAD to score more as the sony doesnt have multi outs. Surely thats a star right there?

Anyways, you carry on. I feel youve a massive chip on your shoulder about this and id rather leave you to it methinks..............

Sorry to again deviate from the topic, Clare.

Hi, hilltribe. Just curious - you say you have the BD85 Blu-ray player? Can you please tell me your calibration settings so i can compare them to mine and decide if i should make any changes in-order to fully optimise the player.

Hello all,
My name is John Cobb and I work for Sony Product Quality here in the UK

We are sorry to hear of the issues you are experiencing with your Sony BDP-S370s and Sony TVs, but are pleased to inform you that we have identified the problem and have developed a software countermeasure to correct it.

The software, version number M03.R.623 (S370), or M04.R.624 (S470/S570) will be available as of 7th July.

There are two methods for updating, via network connection for units connected to the internet which have Network Update enabled or alternatively an upgrade disc can be made using the software which will be available on our Customer support website.

Here you will find full instructions on both upgrade methods.

Alas, good news. I decided to hang on to my player in the end after reading a patch was to be released and although I haven't updated the player yet, I'm hopeful of the outcome. Thank you to the man from Sony UK. I hope your office appreciates your customer service skills. Thanks to Andy for keeping us informed. I've only been registered for a few weeks but have found the site extremely helpful and it's been a success in restoring my faith and peace of mind in Sony. Yours sincerley, Sony Fan Boy.

Hoorah! And actually it is nice to see a Sony representative actually have the courage to come on the forum and update us 'from the horses mouth' as it were. Top marks for that (does not get Sony off the hook for releasing a product designed to connect to TV's that is not compatible with its own TV's!!! I hope there will be some serious procedure and process improvements in the development and testing engineering depts (maybe some responsible heads lost) at Sony. Good job Sony does not make ER surgeons!)

Anyway thats tomorrow - we will all no doubt be watching films's tom eve and report back!

And yeh, back on track

Maybe a mod could move the 'discussion' posts to another thread, to clear the topic for others with this issue? Would be normal practice in other forums I am in, so follows forum/blog precedent. Thanks

Andrew,

I was one of the original posters on the forum and have been waiting patiently - and thanks Sony patience has been rewarded. Will tentatively update today and see if all resolved. Thanks for the input and assistance of the What Hi-Fi staff on this one - it will make what is an excellent player an even better one.

Really enjoyed the review of the new Sony 37" in the latest issue and it may be my next purchase to upgrade my existing 32" W series TV. Will wait for the price to drop a little first and get the blessing of her indoors! Surely an extra 5 inches won't look that horrendous in the living room!

Thanks again

Fred

*adopts Professor Farnsworth's voice:

"Good news everyone!"

Installed the new firmware. Haven't had a single drop out in an hour and a half of watching a DVD (yeah I know, why not BD, dunno, just wanted to watch this particular one).

Hi John

I was hoping this upgrade might cure the problem I, and others, are having whereby the DLNA streaming doesn't work. The player can 'see' my Mac and navigate the media folders but cannot play / view any of the files.

I emailed your support two days ago but have heard nothing back.

Any help would be appreciated as I bought this model partly for its stated ability to stream from a DLNA server...

Thanks

Andrew Everard:

[We have highlighted the update in a News story, even though I'm sure that flies in the face of convention...

I think thats a fabulous action and the right thing to do - it will help many who aren't in the forum. Still think Sony should be paying WHF for some column inches to tell everyone - even if they spin it along a 'how good are we at listening and fixing things' route.

Many, many thanks to all involved at WHF - would not have happened without your help. Top job.

Just watched Blade Runner DVD and didn't notice any sound drop. Will try a BD tomorrow as they were effected more on my machine before.

A big 'Thank you' to all at What Hi-Fi for pursuing this with Sony. I applied the update last night and have noticed no sound drop outs since (it also seems to have resolved the problem with the sound and picture sometimes appearing out of sync too). Thanks also to the gentleman from Sony who kindly notified us all that a firmware update was ready.

Best wishes,

Ryan Hill

I've been a lurker on this thread for some time now as I have been experiencing the sound drop out problems. I've finally decided to register and comment because despite the firmware update, the drop outs are still happening for me! I have tried two different Blu-rays and the same result - a drop out within minutes. This is getting ridiculous. So much for fixing it.

For the record, my set up is a BDP-S370 connected directly to a Sony KDL-40EX503 TV via HDMI (both with the latest firmware). I also have a six-month-old S360 Blu-ray player, which does not produce the fault.

Sony, get your act together.

I have updated mine and have the same equipment and set up as you, and so far it seeems to have cured it.

Full DVD no drop out and 45 mins of Dark Knight Blu Ray was now fine. Also think the snyc issue mentioned above seems better as well I had noticed this on avatar. So well chuffed.

Did you check the system settings after to see it says M03.R.623 as the firmware on the Blu ray? not the previous update version mentioned on this thread? Worth checking.

Maybe the update did not take - it takes quite a while to install after downloading, also a big file, 78+ meg, and then does an auto restart. Basically from setting the update going do not touch anything, on blu ray or tv just let it run.

Hope that helps - I believe the fix does work and their reaction and support has been good.

It may be the HDMI cable if a £2 etc or free one as it likely will be v1 or v1.2 and not support 1080p or true HD sound outputs. If so try a V1.3b or c (any marked 'high speed') any quality brand about £10-30 (no need to spend more as the only factor across cables supporting the same HDMI version, i.e.min speed/specs is construction accuracy, in the length of each channel, and shielding which any quality lead will have a plenty (learn about HDMI, in detail you'll see why - see wiki for lots of data) .
