Hey

I know some people who pre-ordered got this movie already.

Any comments on quality and sound as I am going to HMV to buy Avatar as seen the first few minutes and it seems amazing so will buy it the reference quality seems system blowing.. Ha

Is saving private ryan far far better transfer than upscale dvd?

Nice 1

I watched it last night and my wife commented that the picture seemed quite grainy.

I agree with her - I am disappointed in the pq and sq did not seem special considering

DTS HD Master.

I must add the caveat that I have a Sony KDL 40W2000 which is not 24fps, but other

blu rays look fantastic. Player is a Panny bd35.

Hi,

I pre ordered and got mine through on Friday. The picture quality is superb, and the difference between the upscaled DVD and the Blu Ray is night and day. So much more detail, depth, stability and clarity to the image. You can see individual grains of sand on the beach in some cases, when compared to a dark smear on the upscaled DVD.

One thing to add, if you don't like film grain, you may not like it as it is a completely faithful transfer which includes a healthy amount of grain as the director intended. To be honest, its not very noticeable, and helps make it look realistically 'gritty', and is technically meant to be there, but if you dislike such things its worth considering. The sound is also much improved other the standard lossy 5.1 mix, the first 25 mins (which is all I've had time to watch thus far thanks to uni work

) is terrifying in a good way.

If you like the film (and it is superb) its definitely worth the upgrade.

Hope that helps!

If it's a grainy picture then its probably a very good picture. This film was treated with a new process of washing the negatives before developing them when originally made to give it a truer sense of nostalgia. Even the original DVD release of it in the US carried a warning on the back cover that if, when viewing, you think the colours appear washed out an the transfer contains a high level of grain, there is no need to adjust your television or DVD player and the disc is not defective. It is a creative stylistic decision made by the filmmakers and has been preserved in the transfer. The movie is meant to visually occupy the time and place of the story and not to look pristine and plastic like a computer animation.

Thanks mate. I know the grain is in there as part of the film, and thats what people complain about, but it adds to the realism, band of brothers had grain as well.

That does not bother me, as I think it would look stupid if it looked prestine and no grain.

Thanks, will buy it, if its a lot better than dvd

Wow - you've convinced me to buy it! But I've just checked my LoveFilm list and it's the next disc I'm getting so will watch the rented one then purchase for posterity in a few months when it'll (hopefully) be a few quid cheaper...

Thanks for explaining the origins of the 'graininess' and bleached colours in the Blu-ray

version, that explains the unimproved pq but what about the absence of improved sound

compared to the dvd? I'm not knocking the movie - it's brilliant - but I really wanted better

definition. I am not a computer gamer so don't compare everything to hi res games, just

to what I have already got or seen before.

chudleighpaul:I have the DTS DVD Version and the sound on that is awesome, can't really see how it could be improved enough to justify buying the Bluray version

Er, 'cos the sound won't be compressed?

Couldnt agree more, the prices in HMV are ridiculous! I dont know how they are still in business? Who in there right mind would want to pay stupid prices for a dvd / blu-ray when they could go to pretty much any other retailer and get it much cheaper! Some blu-ray discs are £25 + in HMV and if you are willing to do a bit of internet shopping you can purchase for half the price.

Got SPR from LoveFilm last night. Didn't have time to watch it but flicked on a few scenes. Have to say the PQ didn't look much different from the DVD version. Will probably give it a proper watch at the w/e and take it round the in-laws who'll shortly be receiving the latest Sony OLED 60" monster so we'll see what it's like on that...

60" OLED TV?

I have never seen a 60" OLED, they only do 15" right now as its so expensive to make.

Oh, think I might have the name wrong then! It's an LED backlit LCD - thought they were referred to as 'OLED' but clearly I was wrong !

Considering all the manufacturers seem to keep starting up and stopping again on OLED R&D it might take a bit more than that even. We might even have holograph 3D displays before OLED ever gets sorted.
