Samsung HT-C9950W - Stunning 3D blu-ray system!

Other manufacturers (Panasonic) have to learn a thing or two from Samsung for designing their products.

This looks awesome! And it's a full 7.1 system with a 3d blu-ray player (which is the centre of attraction)! I hope the performance justifies its price tag (£1999).

Any chance of a review?

I read the review on another site this morning - it is the system to die for.

However, I also found out that compared with Samsung's own HT-C6930W which is 3 times cheaper, it's (only?) advantage is great styling and - finally! - powered sub (actually this is the first all-in-one with powered sub as far as I'm aware, hope it goes to cheaper Samsung models next year).

Both systems have 3D capability, internet, and DLNA streaming capability, same (wide) format support etc. etc...

I am in the market for all-in-one, but holding the purchase until support for flac and wav files comes to all-in-one systems, hopefully with next year models.

We've been asking for a review sample for yonks - it's the matching cinema system for the Samsung C8000/9000 TVs. Not sure if we have one 'in the house'....And the office is deserted!

I'm curious - how have other publications managed to always get review samples of new products ahead of What Hi-Fi when you're the 'World's No 1 Home Entertainment' magazine?

I would think that all these manufacturers would be clamouring for you to do the reviews first, before anyone else? They should literally be breaking your down door, one would expect?

Er, they haven't 'always' got review samples before us - we have bags of exclusives, thanks

Indeed we were the first to have the review of the Samsung C9000 set.

Some manufacturers like to 'spread the love' and give out review samples to a wide group.

Others are aware that our comparative, performance-per-pound testing in dedicated facilties might be a tougher challenge for them than elsewhere, which may cause them to look for reviews that take a different approach first.

And, of course, we publish in print before online - so we may have the review samples first, but be beaten to the review release by an online-only brand.

Please note these are general statements and not specific to the Samsung in question.

Fair comments, Clare. I would usually take the witholding of a review sample as an indication of concern (i.e a lack of confidence in their product by manufacturers). As you say, in such circumstances there is obvious logic is supplying products for review to other publications (often online ones) that might publish a less rigorously comparative or more sympathetic review.

It sounds a similar situation to film reviews in a well known UK publication: usually if a review is published last minute because the distributor witheld a sample copy of the film, you can be pretty sure it's a dud (which is generally confirmed when the review is finally published). Of course there are exceptions to the rule, but why wouldn't a manufacturer want to supply products they're proud of to a magazine with the capacity to promote them among a wide readership.

EDIT: I wonder -- on a sound-per-pound ratio -- how the Samsung would fare against similarly priced rivals...

It will be an interesting read if you get hold of a review sample

There aren't many products out there which are stylish, reasonably priced & with audiophile quality sound.

"There's no denying that it's a classy finish."

I wouldn't dispute that, but does it perform as well as (perhaps) less aesthetically pleasing, similarly priced systems? I suspect for the £2,000 price-tag you could compile a superior separates system, in terms of both sound and vision. Which, of course, is not to deny its appeal stylistically.

I'm interested to know that as well. Very few manufacturers have achieved style + substance; they usually concentrate on either but not both.

The best performing subs, for example, are usually the ugliest......that is until the B&W PV1 & Monitor Audio AW12 arrived.

Ah, so not ready to jump on the 3D bandwagon yet...

Count yourself fortunate Max. When I go away for a while nobody notices (let alone starts a thread lamenting my absence)!

im not interested in 3d strapped, i do like a good action movie and appreciate that in 3d, such movies may look great, but im kind of over the initial high res audio visual wow stage now, and id just like to see more old school great movies, story, plot, acting etc ..

it seems to me that 3d is not going to be applied to that type of film, think, goodfellas, casino, there will be blood etc. and if it were, i fail to see how it would enhance them? i do think 3d is here to stay though, gamers in paticular will lap it up imo..

Max, you're right. The vastmajority of 3D movies so far are kids films.....they're trying to win us round to it through our kids. Just took my brood to see Despicable Me in 3D and while I would admit that for the first 5-10 minutes the 3D fx were very good, the novelty soon wore off. Had to keep cleaning the kids glasses, there did seem to be gratuitous 3D scenes which won't work in the normal 2D movie and 2 of the kids came out of the cinema complaining of headaches which is very unusual.
