What are the risks of not having some form of surge protection? My amp has an internal fuse, would this protect against surge? I have little electrical knowledge so worry about expensive kit going up in a puff of smoke.....

I worry about any modification that is not one where a product is sent to the manufacturer or recognised sepcialist and carries a guarantee. Or else a canny insurance assesor studying the remains of your burnt out house may refuse a claim based on DIY electrics. I would always forego a 1% improvement in sound rather than risk the forementioned, though accepted extreme example.

I'm in the same boat as you. I wouldn't modify any of my gear internally.

I checked the thing about the fuse. The fuse in the 3-pin plug is there to protect the cable, and not the appliance. In general, apparently, an appliance will have an internal fuse to protect it. This means that you could use a 13A fuse on a mains lead as has been suggested. However, the mains cable must be rated to accept 13A. This is dependent on the thickness of the conductors in the cable. I assume therefore that the reason Cyrus tell me to use a 5A fuse if I need to swap the plug is because the supplied mains lead is only rated to 5A. And apparently, if you don't match up fuses to wires you can run the risk of fire in the event of a fault.

All of which leaves me wondering: If the amp and CD have internal fuses, how does changing an external fuse / lead affect the sound?

No! There was almost bloodshed last time someone asked that innocent question.
