Mr. K....you may hate me for this but I really would like to know more about how you rate HiFi products.

In Ultimate guide the Plinus cd player got 4 stars, I have read the review over and over and it seem that you (or whoever review the machine) really like it.

"The sound is as musical as hifi get"...."Soundstaging is precise, and the balance well judged"

read like the perfect cd player to me but 4 stars!

On the other hand 5 stars Marantz SA-7S1 which cost nearly double (fab machine that I agree) get a comment like "Timing isn't entirely crisp" and "We'd like a little more authority in the bass".

and similar case with 4 stars PreAc 140 that read like the best for the price and 5stars Ruark Talisman III has a "noticeable weakness"

I am not having a go by any mean but Can you see where I coming from?

[/quote]That's a tricky journey. It's single carriageway most of the way.

I think the Plinius CD player rating is a typo - it should have been 5 stars???
jules.

Sweet of you to offer, but a bit busy testing an Onkyo receiver this afternoon

Nice one, JD - neatly brought it back onto the topic of Ipswich

Welcome. Usual fee applies, invoice on its way.

That's absolutely correct. To compound the irritation, it appears with its correct five-star rating all present and correct on p65, as the partner for the 9300 amplifier. And thenÿ- wouldn't you know it - it reappears at four stars on p75, as the partner for the P10/M8 pre/power.
Sorry to all: subbing mistakes do creep in to any magazine from time to time, but despite the volume of product in the magazine, this really ought to have been avoided. Naturally, I've already clarified matters with Plinius, but the gracious folks over there are so delighted with their coverage elsewhere in the magazine that they've decided to let me off this once.

You're forgiven Mr Kerr.

OK Since I've helped answer that one perhaps someone could answer me this: How do WHF decide the star ratings to give CDs and mp3 downloads? Take this months CDs. Supergrass get a great review but are given only 3 stars.. how come? Perhaps it's because the CD is too expensive (??!?!) i.e. if it was priced at only £4 then it would get 5stars using the 'sound per pound' rating WHF give all products.....
Or is the rating given on purely artist merit with no pricing factors involved? or is it production/mastering quality?
Thanksjules.

Nice one guys (and lady!)

It's always on sound quality (or in the case of DVD/Blu-ray reviews, sound and vision quality). We've all got our own musical tastes, but we're all big enough - we like to think - to be able to assess discs for their technical merits, and not on artistic considerations.
That said - and bloopers seem to be the theme of the day today - I've checked with the author of the piece, and his original review gave the disc four stars, not three. Which might explain your question.
At least this time it weren't me, guv.
