Hello,

Please place this post in another forum if it does not belong here.

I have always been a vinyl/turntable lover.

Whenever I listen to music from another source, such as background music played quietly in a coffee shop or the intro to a Y****be video, every instrument on the track and the music itself is irritating, the same volume and the fashionable clicking/percussion sounds, fashionable in modern songs sound ear-piercing.

It that compressed music and or compression's effect on my ears?

Background music should be compressed as otherwise a fair proportion of it would be so quiet as to be inaudible. That’s why radio transmissions are often compressed because the majority of it is consumed in cars, kitchens, cafes, workplaces, on headphones, etc.

Try a few minutes of Classic FM versus BBC Radio 3 and even on similar content you’ll soon hear what compression sounds like.
