PS3 lossless files through marantz cd6003 or new DAC?

Good evening,

I currenlty have Marantz cd6003, pm6003, wharfedale 10.1. Fairly happy with the sound overall (perhaps a little too warm, voices could be a bit more upfront but nice sound overall)

Thinking of getting a PS3 (250gb) and wondered if i could use it store lossless files and then play them thorugh my system. The next question is can i connect it to the cd6003 to use it's dac and would this sound good? Alternatively would selling the cd6003 and buying a DAC be better? I am not too bothered about having a CD player if i can get similar quality sound from ps3/dac. If the marantz would do as good a job as an external dac i may as well keep it i suppose as this would be less hastle than selling and buying a DAC

Any help would be great

read somewhere that the older playstations make excellent cd players with really good quality sound and soundstage ...

never tried one yet on my system and not sure if this is true

You won't be able to access the Marantz' DAC as it doesn't have a digital input. An external DAC would be the better option.

Thanks for answer, but does the USB input allow access to the DAC of the CD player? I believe it is meant to be able to play a memory stick which has no DAC?

From what I can gather (and I may be wrong), the USB input is for Ipod connectivity only.

If the sound is too warm with the Wharfedale 10.1 you should try the Dali Lektor 2 speakers. I use mine with a PM6003/CD6002 combo and it sounds just perfect.

I would say it is pretty good. I am happy overall. Demod quite a few others up to around £1000 and I prefer the overall sound of this one. For £600 I think it is a bargain. I am just not too bothered about having a cd player.

Playing files from a USB drive via the USB port isn't the same thing as accessing the DAC though is it? In this case it is your cd-player that is accessing files stored in the USB key and then playing them back which is a bit different. In the same way I guess the airport express won't be of much use either.

As for using the PS3 for music, it's okay, media management is pretty basic and it is really let down on the supported formats (no lossless so I'm stuck using wav files). However it doesn't sound bad (even without a DAC it's acceptable) and with a DAC via optical should sound pretty good.

This is from the mag's review:

"As with the Denon, the CD6003 provides you with a headphone output and iPod-compatible USB input".

Surely if the input was pc compatible, it would have been mentioned. And also, if the CD6003 was able to share it's DAC with music files, surely this would have come up before - I mean it easily be the cheapest cd player on the market with accessible DAC?

certainly suggests it's possible!

Well you can probably connect an external HDD to it and use that to play your music back that way but you would not be able to connect some other kind of device to it. To use it with a PC for example it would need to act as an external sound card to be connected via usb which is totally different to decoding files from a usb storage device.

Not a massive surprise considering it's a £300 spinner - Marantz would be able to add at least another £150 if you could do what you had planned. Still handy being able to plug your ipod to it.

After reading the manual It sounds like a great player feature-wise. It's got pitch control as well so you can pretend you're a proper DJ without leaving your sofa. Pretty cool.
