I just discovered that I had been setting my PS3 output all wrong. My Sony LCD TV doesn't like the HDMI full setting (much darker image) and when I set it to limited the picture looks quite good.

It can really ruin the picture quality on everything the PS3 plays, and it's a bit annoying that Sony don't tell / warn customers about this, who might have thought that HDMI full would yield the best picture quality.

It is badly worded

FULL is for 'deep colour' tvs. But theres really no difference between using FULL on a deep colour tv or LIMITED on a standard one as nothing actually uses deep colour anyways

Using FULL on a standard tv will (as youve found out) 'crush' the blacks and whites (meaning extreme blacks and whites dont show at all)

Many blu-ray players (including the ps3)
can analyze the 4:2:0 encoded signal on a blu-ray, and then interpolate
the missing color data, and output it as 4:4:4 with the correct color
detail.

This gives better graduations of color across the screen,
and cleaner edges along coloured borders. To see the benefit both the
display and bdplayer must support a 4:4:4 input.

The opening sequence of 2012 where it pans aways from the sun towards the earth is good example of how deep color can reduce the banding.

I dont recall ever hearing the PS3 doing that. Was that via a firmware update at some point or has it always done that?

Firmware update - last summer I believe it was - probably 3.3 or 3.4 - cant say exactly when, but it sticks in my mind because it was a particularly sunny day streaming through my windows hindering my attempts at trying it out.
